Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching. 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,
The chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death ; for they were afraid of the people. 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.
And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.
They were glad and agreed to give him money. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowd. 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it." 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."
They said to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare it?" 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked.
And He said to them, "When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water ; follow him into the house that he enters. 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters,
"And you shall say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples ?"' 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'
"And he will show you a large, furnished upper room ; prepare it there." 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there."
And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
And He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer ; 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, "Take this and share it among yourselves ; 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you.
for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes." 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
"But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.
"For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined ; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed !" 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him."
And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing. 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.
And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.' 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.
"But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.
"For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves ? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
"You are those who have stood by Me in My trials ; 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials.
and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,
that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat ; 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.
but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail ; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
But he said to Him, "Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death !" 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death."
And He said, "I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me." 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me."
And He said to them, "When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?" They said, "No, nothing." 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered.
And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
"For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS '; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment." 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment."
They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough." 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied.
And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives ; and the disciples also followed Him. 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.
When He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."
And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."
Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
And being in agony He was praying very fervently ; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.
and said to them, "Why are you sleeping ? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation." 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."
While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,
But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss ?" 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword ?" 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?"
And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
But Jesus answered and said, "Stop ! No more of this." And He touched his ear and healed him. 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber ? 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?
"While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours." 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns."
Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest ; but Peter was following at a distance. 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.
After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.
And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, "This man was with Him too." 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."
But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him." 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.
A little later, another saw him and said, "You are one of them too !" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied.
After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, "Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too." 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."
But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.
The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times." 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times."
And he went out and wept bitterly. 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.
and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?" 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"
And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming. 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.
When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.
"If You are the Christ, tell us." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe ; 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me,
and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.
"But from now on THE SON OF MAN WILL BE SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND of the power OF GOD." 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."
And they all said, "Are You the Son of God, then ?" And He said to them, "Yes, I am." 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am."
Then they said, "What further need do we have of testimony ? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth." 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
