| 1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. | 1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: |
| 2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren; | 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, |
| 3 and Judah begat Perez and Zerah of Tamar; and Perez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram; | 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, |
| 4 and Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon; | 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, |
| 5 and Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; | 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, |
| 6 and Jesse begat David the king. And David begat Solomon of her [that had been the wife] of Uriah; | 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, |
| 7 and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa; | 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, |
| 8 and Asa begat Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Uzziah; | 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, |
| 9 and Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah; | 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, |
| 10 and Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amon; and Amon begat Josiah; | 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, |
| 11 and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brethren, at the time of the carrying away to Babylon. | 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. |
| 12 And after the carrying away to Babylon, Jechoniah begat Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel; | 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, |
| 13 and Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; | 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, |
| 14 and Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; | 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, |
| 15 and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; | 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, |
| 16 and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. | 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. |
| 17 So all the generations from Abraham unto David are fourteen generations; and from David unto the carrying away to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon unto the Christ fourteen generations. | 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. |
| 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. | 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. |
| 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. | 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. |
| 20 But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
| 21 And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins. | 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
| 22 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, | 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: |
| 23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us. | 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." |
| 24 And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife; | 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. |
| 25 and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS. | 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. |
