The Darby Translation (DBY) New International Version (NIV)
Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold magi from the east arrived at Jerusalem, saying, 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem
Where is the king of the Jews that has been born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to do him homage. 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
But Herod the king having heard [of it], was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
and, assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.
And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet: 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
And *thou* Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel. 6 " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' "
Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing; 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found [him] bring me back word, so that *I* also may come and do him homage. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was. 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
And when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
And having come into the house they saw the little child with Mary his mother, and falling down did him homage. And having opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
And being divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
Now, they having departed, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, take to [thee] the little child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I shall tell thee; for Herod will seek the little child to destroy it. 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
And, having arisen, he took to [him] the little child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt. 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
And he was there until the death of Herod, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by [the] Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which [were] in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi. 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
A voice has been heard in Rama, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. 18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
But Herod having died, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
Arise, take to [thee] the little child and its mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the life of the little child are dead. 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
And he arose and took to [him] the little child and its mother, and came into the land of Israel; 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
but having heard that 'Archelaus reigns over Judaea, instead of Herod his father,' he was afraid to go there; and having been divinely instructed in a dream, he went away into the parts of Galilee, 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
and came and dwelt in a town called Nazareth; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, He shall be called a Nazaraean. 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
