New Century Version (NCV) New International Version (NIV)
Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea during the time when Herod was king. When Jesus was born, some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem
They asked, "Where is the baby who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, as well as all the people in Jerusalem. 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
Herod called a meeting of all the leading priests and teachers of the law and asked them where the Christ would be born. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.
They answered, "In the town of Bethlehem in Judea. The prophet wrote about this in the Scriptures: 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are important among the tribes of Judah. A ruler will come from you who will be like a shepherd for my people Israel.'" Micah 6 " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' "
Then Herod had a secret meeting with the wise men and learned from them the exact time they first saw the star. 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
He sent the wise men to Bethlehem, saying, "Look carefully for the child. When you find him, come tell me so I can worship him too." 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
After the wise men heard the king, they left. The star that they had seen in the east went before them until it stopped above the place where the child was. 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
When the wise men saw the star, they were filled with joy. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
They came to the house where the child was and saw him with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. They opened their gifts and gave him treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
But God warned the wise men in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they returned to their own country by a different way. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
After they left, an angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt, because Herod is starting to look for the child so he can kill him. Stay in Egypt until I tell you to return." 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
So Joseph got up and left for Egypt during the night with the child and his mother. 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
And Joseph stayed in Egypt until Herod died. This happened to bring about what the Lord had said through the prophet: "I called my son out of Egypt." 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
When Herod saw that the wise men had tricked him, he was furious. So he gave an order to kill all the baby boys in Bethlehem and in the surrounding area who were two years old or younger. This was in keeping with the time he learned from the wise men. 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
So what God had said through the prophet Jeremiah came true: 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
"A voice was heard in Ramah of painful crying and deep sadness: Rachel crying for her children. She refused to be comforted, because her children are dead." 18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
After Herod died, an angel of the Lord spoke to Joseph in a dream while he was in Egypt. 19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
The angel said, "Get up! Take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, because the people who were trying to kill the child are now dead." 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
So Joseph took the child and his mother and went to Israel. 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
But he heard that Archelaus was now king in Judea since his father Herod had died. So Joseph was afraid to go there. After being warned in a dream, he went to the area of Galilee, 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
to a town called Nazareth, and lived there. And so what God had said through the prophets came true: "He will be called a Nazarene." 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
