Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
"The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat; 2 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. 3 So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them 4 They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. 5 "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;
They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;
and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. 7 they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.'
But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. 8 "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.
And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father—the one in heaven. 9 And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. 10 Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
The greatest among you will be your servant. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.
All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. 13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
14 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. 15 "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'
"Woe to you, blind guides, who say, "Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.' 16 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred? 17 You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.'
And you say, "Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.' 18 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred 19 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; 20 And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it 21 And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.
and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it. 22 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. 23 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! 24 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 25 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean. 26 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. 27 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 28 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, 29 And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
and you say, "If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' 30 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 31 Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers!
Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors. 32 "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?
You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced to hell? 33 Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.
Therefore I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, 34 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 35 I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.
Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation 36 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 37 Look, your house is left to you desolate.
See, your house is left to you, desolate. 38 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "
For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.' " 39
