"Then the kingdom of heaven may be compared to ten virgins who took their lamps [and] went out to meet the bridegroom. 1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Now five of them were foolish and five [were] wise. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
For [when] the foolish ones took their lamps, they did not take olive oil with them. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.
But the wise ones took olive oil in flasks with their lamps. 4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
And [when] the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
But in the middle of the night there was a shout, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' 6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
Then all those virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
And the foolish ones said to the wise ones, 'Give us [some] of your olive oil, because our lamps are going out!' 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'
But the wise ones answered saying, "Certainly there will never be enough for us and for you! Go instead to those who sell [olive oil] and buy [some] for yourselves.' 9 " 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'
But [while] they had gone away to buy [it] the bridegroom arrived, and those who were ready went inside with him to the wedding celebration, and the door was shut. 10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
And later the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open [the door] for us!' 11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'
But he answered [and] said, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you!' 12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'
Therefore be on the alert, because you do not know the day or the hour! 13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
For [it is] like a man going on a journey. He summoned his own slaves and handed over his property to them. 14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.
And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to each one according to his own ability, and he went on a journey immediately. 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.
The one who had received the five talents went out [and] traded with them and gained five more. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.
In the same way the one [who had] the two gained two more. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more.
But the one who had received the one went away [and] dug up the ground and hid his master's money. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
Now after a long time, the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
And the one who had received the five talents came up [and] brought five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me five talents. See, I have gained five more talents!' 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few [things]; I will put you [in charge] over many [things]. Enter into the joy of your master!' 21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
And the one [who had] the two talents also came up [and] said, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents. See, I have gained two talents more!' 22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few [things]; I will put you [in charge] over many [things]. Enter into the joy of your master!' 23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
And the one who had received the one talent came up also [and] said, 'Master, [because I] knew you, that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering from where you did not scatter [seed]. 24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
And [because I] was afraid, I went away [and] hid your talent in the ground. See, you have [what is] yours!' 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'
But his master answered [and] said to him, 'Evil and lazy slave! You knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather from where I did not scatter [seed]. 26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?
Then you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and [when I] returned I would have gotten back [what was] mine with interest! 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
Therefore take the talent from him and give [it] to the one who has the ten talents. 28 " 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.
For to everyone who has, [more] will be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
And throw the worthless slave into the outer darkness--in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!' 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Now when the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.
And all the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate them from one another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
And he will place the sheep on his right and the goats on the left. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, [you] who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world! 34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
For I was hungry and you gave me [something] to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me [something] to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me as a guest, 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you cared for me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed [you], or thirsty and give [you something] to drink? 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
And when did we see you a stranger and welcome [you] as a guest, or naked and clothe [you]? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
And when did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?' 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
And the king will answer [and] say to them, 'Truly I say to you, in as much as you did [it] to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did [it] to me.' 40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Then he will also say to those on [his] left, 'Depart from me, [you] accursed ones, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels! 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you did not give me [anything] to eat, I was thirsty and you did not give me [anything] to drink, 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
I was a stranger and you did not welcome me as a guest, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not care for me.' 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
Then they will also answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and not serve you?' 44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly I say to you, in as much as you did not do [it] to one of the least of these, you did not do [it] to me.' 45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." 46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
