Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride. 1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
And five of them were foolish and five wise. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.
But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps. 4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh. Go ye forth to meet him. 6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'
The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell and buy for yourselves. 9 " 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'
Now whilst they went to buy the bridegroom came: and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage. And the door was shut. 10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
But at last came also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us. 11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'
But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not. 12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'
Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour. 13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
For even as a man going into a far country called his servants and delivered to them his goods; 14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.
And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey. 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.
And he that had received the five talents went his way and traded with the same and gained other five. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.
And in like manner he that had received the two gained other two. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more.
But he that had received the one, going his way, digged into the earth and hid his lord’s money. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
But after a long time the lord of those servants came and reckoned with them. 19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents. Behold I have gained other five over and above. 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'
His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
And he also that had received the two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst two talents to me. Behold I have gained other two. 22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'
His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
But he that had received the one talent, came and said: Lord, I know that thou art a hard man; thou reapest where thou hast not sown and gatherest where thou hast not strewed. 24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
And being afraid, I went and hid thy talent in the earth. Behold here thou hast that which is thine. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'
And his lord answering, said to him: Wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sow not and gather where I have not strewed. 26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?
Thou oughtest therefore to have committed my money to the bankers: and at my coming I should have received my own with usury. 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
Take ye away therefore the talent from him and give it him that hath ten talents. 28 " 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.
For to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall abound: but from him that hath not, that also which he seemeth to have shall be taken away. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
And the unprofitable servant, cast ye out into the exterior darkness. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
And when the Son of man shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty. 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.
And all nations shall be gathered together before him: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats: 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me. 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
Then shall the just answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry and fed thee: thirsty and gave thee drink? 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
Or when did we see thee a stranger and took thee in? Or naked and covered thee? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and came to thee? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
And the king answering shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. 40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels. 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you gave me not to eat: I was thirsty and you gave me not to drink. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
I was a stranger and you took me not in: naked and you covered me not: sick and in prison and you did not visit me. 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
Then they also shall answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister to thee? 44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
Then he shall answer them, saying: Amen: I say to you, as long as you did it not to one of these least, neither did you do it to me. 45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting. 46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
