New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. 1 When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.
Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached Jesus. He knelt before him, worshiping. "Lord," the man said, "if you want to, you can make me well again." 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."
Jesus touched him. "I want to," he said. "Be healed!" And instantly the leprosy disappeared. 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.
Then Jesus said to him, "Go right over to the priest and let him examine you. Don't talk to anyone along the way. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy, so everyone will have proof of your healing." 4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
When Jesus arrived in Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him, 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.
"Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and racked with pain." 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering."
Jesus said, "I will come and heal him." 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him."
Then the officer said, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed! 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
I know, because I am under the authority of my superior officers and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, 'Go,' and they go, or 'Come,' and they come. And if I say to my slaves, 'Do this or that,' they do it." 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd, he said, "I tell you the truth, I haven't seen faith like this in all the land of Israel! 10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
But many Israelites -- those for whom the Kingdom was prepared -- will be cast into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, "Go on home. What you have believed has happened." And the young servant was healed that same hour. 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour.
When Jesus arrived at Peter's house, Peter's mother-in-law was in bed with a high fever. 14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. All the spirits fled when he commanded them to leave; and he healed all the sick. 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
This fulfilled the word of the Lord through Isaiah, who said, "He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases." 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."
When Jesus noticed how large the crowd was growing, he instructed his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.
Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you no matter where you go!" 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
But Jesus said, "Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but I, the Son of Man, have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head." 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
Another of his disciples said, "Lord, first let me return home and bury my father." 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
But Jesus told him, "Follow me now! Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead." 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.
Suddenly, a terrible storm came up, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.
The disciples went to him and woke him up, shouting, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"
And Jesus answered, "Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!" Then he stood up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly all was calm. 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
The disciples just sat there in awe. "Who is this?" they asked themselves. "Even the wind and waves obey him!" 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake in the land of the Gadarenes, two men who were possessed by demons met him. They lived in a cemetery and were so dangerous that no one could go through that area. 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
They began screaming at him, "Why are you bothering us, Son of God? You have no right to torture us before God's appointed time!" 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"
A large herd of pigs was feeding in the distance, 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
so the demons begged, "If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs." 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."
"All right, go!" Jesus commanded them. So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. 32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.
The herdsmen fled to the nearby city, telling everyone what happened to the demon-possessed men. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
The entire town came out to meet Jesus, but they begged him to go away and leave them alone. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
