Now Moses and Aaron and the chosen leaders 17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been given,
called together the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel twenty years old or older were registered, one by one, 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. 46 The total number was 603,550. 46 The total number was 603,550.
But this total did not include the Levites. 47 The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others.
For the LORD had said to Moses, 48 The LORD had said to Moses:
"Exempt the tribe of Levi from the census; do not include them when you count the rest of the Israelites. 49 "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites.
You must put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and its equipment as you travel, and they must care for it and camp around it. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it.
Whenever the Tabernacle is moved, the Levites will take it down and set it up again. Anyone else who goes too near the Tabernacle will be executed. 51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death.
Each tribe of Israel will have a designated camping area with its own family banner. 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard.
But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to offer the people of Israel protection from the LORD's fierce anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle." 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony."
So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 54 The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
