Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
Now Korach, the son of Yitzhar, the son of Kehat, the son of Levi, with Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eli'av, and On, the son of Pelet, sons of Re'uven, took [men]: 1 Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites--Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth--became insolent
and they rose up before Moshe, with certain of the children of Yisra'el, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown; 2 and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.
and they assembled themselves together against Moshe and against Aharon, and said to them, You take too much on you, seeing all the congregation are holy, everyone of them, and the LORD is among them: why then lift yourselves up above the assembly of the LORD? 3 They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?"
When Moshe heard it, he fell on his face: 4 When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.
and he spoke to Korach and to all his company, saying, In the morning the LORD will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him: even him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near to him. 5 Then he said to Korah and all his followers: "In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him.
This do: take you censers, Korach, and all his company; 6 You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers
and put fire in them, and put incense on them before the LORD tomorrow: and it shall be that the man whom the LORD does choose, he [shall be] holy: you take too much on you, you sons of Levi. 7 and tomorrow put fire and incense in them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far!"
Moshe said to Korach, Hear now, you sons of Levi: 8 Moses also said to Korah, "Now listen, you Levites!
[seems it but] a small thing to you, that the God of Yisra'el has separated you from the congregation of Yisra'el, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tent of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them; 9 Isn't it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the LORD's tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?
and that he has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? and seek you the priesthood also? 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.
Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the LORD: and Aharon, what is he who you murmur against him? 11 It is against the LORD that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?"
Moshe sent to call Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eli'av; and they said, We won't come up: 12 Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, "We will not come!
is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but you must needs make yourself also a prince over us? 13 Isn't it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert? And now you also want to lord it over us?
Moreover you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: will you put out the eyes of these men? we won't come up. 14 Moreover, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come!"
Moshe was very angry, and said to the LORD, "Don't respect their offering: I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them." 15 Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them."
Moshe said to Korach, You and all your company go before the LORD, you, and they, and Aharon, tomorrow: 16 Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow--you and they and Aaron.
and take every man his censer, and put incense on them, and bring you before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred fifty censers; you also, and Aharon, each his censer. 17 Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it--250 censers in all--and present it before the LORD. You and Aaron are to present your censers also."
They took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moshe and Aharon. 18 So each man took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
Korach assembled all the congregation against them to the door of the tent of meeting: and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation. 19 When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire assembly.
The LORD spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying, 20 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. 21 "Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once."
They fell on their faces, and said, God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation? 22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, "O God, God of the spirits of all mankind, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?"
The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 23 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Speak to the congregation, saying, Get away from around the tent of Korach, Datan, and Aviram. 24 "Say to the assembly, 'Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.' "
Moshe rose up and went to Datan and Aviram; and the Zakenim of Yisra'el followed him. 25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
He spoke to the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins. 26 He warned the assembly, "Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins."
So they got them up from the tent of Korach, Datan, and Aviram, on every side: and Datan and Aviram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones. 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents.
Moshe said, Hereby you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works; for [I have] not [done them] of my own mind. 28 Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea:
If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hasn't sent me. 29 If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me.
But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down alive into She'ol; then you shall understand that these men have despised the LORD. 30 But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt."
It happened, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground split apart that was under them; 31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart
and the eretz opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who appertained to Korach, and all their goods. 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions.
So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into She'ol: and the eretz closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly. 33 They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.
All Yisra'el that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the eretz swallow us up. 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!"
Fire came forth from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred fifty men who offered the incense. 35 And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.
The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 36 The LORD said to Moses,
Speak to El`azar the son of Aharon the Kohen, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter you the fire yonder; for they are holy, 37 "Tell Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, to take the censers out of the smoldering remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy--
even the censers of these sinners against their own lives; and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD; therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign to the children of Yisra'el. 38 the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives. Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar, for they were presented before the LORD and have become holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites."
El`azar the Kohen took the brazen censers, which those who were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar, 39 So Eleazar the priest collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar,
to be a memorial to the children of Yisra'el, to the end that no stranger, who isn't of the seed of Aharon, comes near to burn incense before the LORD; that he not be as Korach, and as his company: as the LORD spoke to him by Moshe. 40 as the LORD directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his followers.
But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el murmured against Moshe and against Aharon, saying, You have killed the people of the LORD. 41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. "You have killed the LORD's people," they said.
It happened, when the congregation was assembled against Moshe and against Aharon, that they looked toward the tent of meeting: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. 42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the Tent of Meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared.
Moshe and Aharon came to the front of the tent of meeting. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting,
The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 44 and the LORD said to Moses,
Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. They fell on their faces. 45 "Get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." And they fell facedown.
Moshe said to Aharon, Take they censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun. 46 Then Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer and put incense in it, along with fire from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has started."
Aharon took as Moshe spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them.
He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.
Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korach. 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.
Aharon returned to Moshe to the door of the tent of meeting: and the plague was stayed. 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for the plague had stopped.
