Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 1 The LORD said to Moses,
"Speak to the sons of Israel, and get from them a rod for each father's household : twelve rods, from all their leaders according to their fathers' households. You shall write each name on his rod, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff.
and write Aaron's name on the rod of Levi ; for there is one rod for the head of each of their fathers' households. 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron's name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe.
"You shall then deposit them in the tent of meeting in front of the testimony, where I meet with you. 4 Place them in the Tent of Meeting in front of the Testimony, where I meet with you.
"It will come about that the rod of the man whom I choose will sprout. Thus I will lessen from upon Myself the grumblings of the sons of Israel, who are grumbling against you." 5 The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites."
Moses therefore spoke to the sons of Israel, and all their leaders gave him a rod apiece, for each leader according to their fathers' households, twelve rods, with the rod of Aaron among their rods. 6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron's staff was among them.
So Moses deposited the rods before the LORD in the tent of the testimony. 7 Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the Tent of the Testimony.
Now on the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony ; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds. 8 The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony and saw that Aaron's staff, which represented the house of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.
Moses then brought out all the rods from the presence of the LORD to all the sons of Israel ; and they looked, and each man took his rod. 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD's presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his own staff.
But the LORD said to Moses, "Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony to be kept as a sign against the rebels, that you may put an end to their grumblings against Me, so that they will not die." 10 The LORD said to Moses, "Put back Aaron's staff in front of the Testimony, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die."
Thus Moses did ; just as the LORD had commanded him, so he did. 11 Moses did just as the LORD commanded him.
Then the sons of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, "Behold, we perish, we are dying, we are all dying ! 12 The Israelites said to Moses, "We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!
"Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the LORD, must die. Are we to perish completely ?" 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the LORD will die. Are we all going to die?"
