Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
Then drew near the daughters of Tzelohchad, the son of Hefer, the son of Gil`ad, the son of Makhir, the son of Menashsheh, of the families of Menashsheh the son of Yosef; and these are the names of his daughters: Machlah, Noach, and Hoglah, and Milkah, and Tirtzah. 1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. They approached
They stood before Moshe, and before El`azar the Kohen, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the tent of meeting, saying, 2 the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly, and said,
Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korach: but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons. 3 "Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah's followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.
Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father. 4 Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives."
Moshe brought their cause before the LORD. 5 So Moses brought their case before the LORD
The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 6 and the LORD said to him,
The daughters of Tzelohchad speak right: you shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers; and you shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. 7 "What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and turn their father's inheritance over to them.
You shall speak to the children of Yisra'el, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. 8 "Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, turn his inheritance over to his daughter.
If he have no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
If he have no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers.
If his father have no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman who is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be to the children of Yisra'el a statute [and] ordinance, as the LORD commanded Moshe. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to be a legal requirement for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.' "
The LORD said to Moshe, Go up into this mountain of `Avarimen, and see the land which I have given to the children of Yisra'el. 12 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain in the Abarim range and see the land I have given the Israelites.
When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as Aharon your brother was gathered; 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was,
because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Tzin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the waters before their eyes. (These are the waters of Merivah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Tzin.) 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes." (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)
Moshe spoke to the LORD, saying, 15 Moses said to the LORD,
Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, 16 "May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community
who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD not be as sheep which have no shepherd. 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD's people will not be like sheep without a shepherd."
The LORD said to Moshe, Take Yehoshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; 18 So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him.
and set him before El`azar the Kohen, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight. 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence.
You shall put of your honor on him, that all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el may obey. 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.
He shall stand before El`azar the Kohen, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Yisra'el with him, even all the congregation. 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in."
Moshe did as the LORD commanded him; and he took Yehoshua, and set him before El`azar the Kohen, and before all the congregation: 22 Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly.
and he laid his hands on him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD spoke by Moshe. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses.
