And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 1 The LORD said to Moses,
"Take vengeance on the Midianites for the children of Israel. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people." 2 "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people."
So Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm some of yourselves for war, and let them go against the Midianites to take vengeance for the Lord on Midian. 3 So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD's vengeance on them.
A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war." 4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel."
So there were recruited from the divisions of Israel one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. 5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.
Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and the signal trumpets in his hand. 6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
And they warred against the Midianites, just as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed all the males. 7 They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man.
They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed--Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword. 8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba--the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods. 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.
They also burned with fire all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts. 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.
And they took all the spoil and all the booty--of man and beast. 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,
Then they brought the captives, the booty, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. 12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went to meet them outside the camp. 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.
But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who had come from the battle. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--who returned from the battle.
And Moses said to them: "Have you kept all the women alive? 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them.
Look, these women caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord. 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people.
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,
But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately. 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
And as for you, remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day. 19 "All of you who have killed anyone or touched anyone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives.
Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats' hair, and everything made of wood." 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood."
Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, "This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses: 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the requirement of the law that the LORD gave Moses:
Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead
everything that can endure fire, you shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean; and it shall be purified with the water of purification. But all that cannot endure fire you shall put through water. 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.
And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp." 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp."
Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 25 The LORD said to Moses,
"Count up the plunder that was taken--of man and beast--you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation; 26 "You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured.
and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. 27 Divide the spoils between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community.
And levy a tribute for the Lord on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep; 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the LORD one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep or goats.
take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest as a heave offering to the Lord. 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part.
And from the children of Israel's half you shall take one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the Lord." 30 From the Israelites' half, select one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle."
So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses. 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.
The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, 32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep,
seventy-two thousand cattle, 33 72,000 cattle,
sixty-one thousand donkeys, 34 61,000 donkeys
and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately. 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.
And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep; 36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:
and the Lord's tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five. 37 of which the tribute for the LORD was 675;
The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the Lord's tribute was seventy-two. 38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the LORD was 72;
The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the Lord's tribute was sixty-one. 39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the LORD was 61;
The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the Lord's tribute was thirty-two persons. 40 16,000 people, of which the tribute for the LORD was 32.
So Moses gave the tribute which was the Lord's heave offering to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses. 41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part, as the LORD commanded Moses.
And from the children of Israel's half, which Moses separated from the men who fought-- 42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men--
now the half belonging to the congregation was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, 43 the community's half--was 337,500 sheep,
thirty-six thousand cattle, 44 36,000 cattle,
thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, 45 30,500 donkeys
and sixteen thousand persons-- 46 and 16,000 people.
and from the children of Israel's half Moses took one of every fifty, drawn from man and beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. 47 From the Israelites' half, Moses selected one out of every fifty persons and animals, as the LORD commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle.
Then the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses; 48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--went to Moses
and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken a count of the men of war who are under our command, and not a man of us is missing. 49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.
Therefore we have brought an offering for the Lord, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord." 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired--armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."
So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, all the fashioned ornaments. 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold--all the crafted articles.
And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the Lord, from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels.
(The men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.) 53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself.
And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of meeting as a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
