It happened on the day that Moshe had finished setting up the tabernacle, and had anointed it and sanctified it, with all its furniture, and the altar with all its vessels, and had anointed and sanctified them; 1 When Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, he anointed it and consecrated it and all its furnishings. He also anointed and consecrated the altar and all its utensils.
that the princes of Yisra'el, the heads of their fathers' houses, offered. These were the princes of the tribes. These are they who were over those who were numbered: 2 Then the leaders of Israel, the heads of families who were the tribal leaders in charge of those who were counted, made offerings.
and they brought their offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for every two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they presented them before the tabernacle. 3 They brought as their gifts before the LORD six covered carts and twelve oxen--an ox from each leader and a cart from every two. These they presented before the tabernacle.
The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 4 The LORD said to Moses,
"Accept these from them, that they may be used in doing the service of the Tent of Meeting; and you shall give them to the Levites, to every man according to his service." 5 "Accept these from them, that they may be used in the work at the Tent of Meeting. Give them to the Levites as each man's work requires."
Moshe took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them to the Levites. 6 So Moses took the carts and oxen and gave them to the Levites.
He gave two wagons and four oxen to the sons of Gershon, according to their service: 7 He gave two carts and four oxen to the Gershonites, as their work required,
and he gave four wagons and eight oxen to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the direction of Itamar the son of Aharon the Kohen. 8 and he gave four carts and eight oxen to the Merarites, as their work required. They were all under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest.
But to the sons of Kehat he gave none, because the service of the sanctuary belonged to them; they carried it on their shoulders. 9 But Moses did not give any to the Kohathites, because they were to carry on their shoulders the holy things, for which they were responsible.
