Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
The proverbs of Shlomo, the son of David, king of Yisra'el: 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding; 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness, justice, and equity; 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
To give prudence to the simple, Knowledge and discretion to the young man: 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--
That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; That the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel: 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance--
To understand a proverb, and parables, The words and riddles of the wise. 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; But the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
My son, listen to your father's instruction, And don't forsake your mother's teaching: 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
For they will be a garland to grace your head, And chains around your neck. 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent. 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.
If they say, "Come with us, Let's lay in wait for blood; Let's lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul;
Let's swallow them up alive like She'ol, And whole, like those who go down into the pit. 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
We'll find all valuable wealth. We'll fill our houses with spoil. 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
You shall cast your lot among us. We'll all have one purse." 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"--
My son, don't walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path, 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
For their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood. 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.
For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird: 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
These lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives. 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!
So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain. It takes away the life of its owners. 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.
Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares. 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;
She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words: 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
"How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, And fools hate knowledge? 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you. 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention; 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
But you have ignored all my counsel, And wanted none of my reproof; 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,
I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you; 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--
When calamity overtakes you like a storm, When your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come on you. 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me; 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
Because they hated knowledge, And didn't choose the fear of the LORD. 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof. 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own schemes. 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, And will be at ease, without fear of harm." 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
