Holman Christian Standard (CSB) New International Version (NIV)
Lord, why do You stand so far away? Why do You hide in times of trouble? 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue the afflicted; let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings; the one who is greedy curses and despises the Lord. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
In all his scheming, the wicked arrogantly thinks: "There is no accountability, [since] God does not exist." 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
His ways are always secure; Your lofty judgments are beyond his sight; he scoffs at all his adversaries. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies.
He says to himself, "I will never be moved- from generation to generation without calamity." 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."
Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth; trouble and malice are under his tongue. 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
He waits in ambush near the villages; he kills the innocent in secret places; his eyes are on the lookout for the helpless. 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims.
He lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket. He lurks in order to seize the afflicted. He seizes the afflicted and drags him in his net. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
He crouches and bends down; the helpless fall because of his strength. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He hides His face and will never see." 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."
Rise up, Lord God! Lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
Why has the wicked despised God? He says to himself, "You will not demand an account." 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?
But You Yourself have seen trouble and grief, observing it in order to take the matter into Your hands. The helpless entrusts himself to You; You are a helper of the fatherless. 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked and evil person; call his wickedness into account until nothing remains of it. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
The Lord is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from His land. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will listen carefully, 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
doing justice for the fatherless and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may terrify [them] no more. 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
