American Standard Version (ASV) New International Version (NIV)
Why do the nations rage, And the peoples meditate a vain thing? 1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against Jehovah, and against his anointed, [saying], 2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One.
Let us break their bonds asunder, And cast away their cords from us. 3 "Let us break their chains," they say, "and throw off their fetters."
He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh: The Lord will have them in derision. 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
Then will he speak unto them in his wrath, And vex them in his sore displeasure: 5 Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
Yet I have set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion. 6 "I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill."
I will tell of the decree: Jehovah said unto me, Thou art my son; This day have I begotten thee. 7 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father.
Ask of me, and I will give [thee] the nations for thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.
Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. 9 You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery."
Now therefore be wise, O ye kings: Be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve Jehovah with fear, And rejoice with trembling. 11 Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish in the way, For his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all they that take refuge in him. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
