(12-18) And he stood upon the sand of the sea. (13-1) And I saw a beast coming up out the sea, having seven heads and ten horns: and upon his horns, ten diadems: and upon his heads, names of blasphemy. 1 And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.
And the beast which I saw was like to a leopard: and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his own strength and great power. 2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.
And I saw one of his heads as it were slain to death: and his death’s wound was healed. And all the earth was in admiration after the beast. 3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast.
And they adored the dragon which gave power to the beast. And they adored the beast, saying: Who is like to the beast? And who shall be able to fight with him? 4 Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"
And there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies: and power was given to him to do, two and forty months. 5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months.
And he opened his mouth unto blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven. 6 He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And power was given him over every tribe and people and tongue and nation. 7 He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.
And all that dwell upon the earth adored him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb which was slain from the beginning of the world. 8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.
If any man have an ear, let him hear. 9 He who has an ear, let him hear.
He that shall lead into captivity shall go into captivity: he that shall kill by the sword must be killed by the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. 10 If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.
And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth: and he had two horns, like a lamb: and he spoke as a dragon. 11 Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.
And he executed all the power of the former beast in his sight. And he caused the earth and them that dwell therein to adore the first beast, whose wound to death was healed. 12 He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.
And he did great signs, so that he made also fire to come down from heaven unto the earth, in the sight of men. 13 And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men.
And he seduced them that dwell on the earth, for the signs which were given him to do in the sight of the beast: saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make the image of the beast which had the wound by the sword and lived. 14 Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.
And it was given him to give life to the image of the beast: and that the image of the beast should speak: and should cause that whosoever will not adore the image of the beast should be slain. 15 He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.
And he shall make all, both little and great, rich and poor, freemen and bondmen, to have a character in their right hand or on their foreheads: 16 He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,
And that no man might buy or sell, but he that hath the character, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 17 so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast. For it is the number of a man: and the number of him is six hundred sixty-six. 18 This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.
