1 Io dico dunque: Iddio ha egli reietto il suo popolo? Così non sia; perché anch’io sono Israelita, della progenie d’Abramo, della tribù di Beniamino.

1 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
|

2 Iddio non ha reietto il suo popolo, che ha preconosciuto. Non sapete voi quel che la Scrittura dice, nella storia d’Elia? Com’egli ricorre a Dio contro Israele, dicendo:
|
2 God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah--how he appealed to God against Israel:
|

3 Signore, hanno ucciso i tuoi profeti, hanno demoliti i tuoi altari, e io son rimasto solo, e cercano la mia vita?
|
3 "Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me" ?
|
|
4 Ma che gli rispose la voce divina? Mi son riserbato settemila uomini, che non han piegato il ginocchio davanti a Baal.
|
4 And what was God's answer to him? "I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal."
|
|
5 E così anche nel tempo presente, v’è un residuo secondo l’elezione della grazia.
|
5 So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
|
|
6 Ma se è per grazia, non è più per opere; altrimenti, grazia non è più grazia.
|
6 And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.
|
|
7 Che dunque? Quel che Israele cerca, non l’ha ottenuto; mentre il residuo eletto l’ha ottenuto;
|
7 What then? What Israel sought so earnestly it did not obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened,
|
|
8 e gli altri sono stati indurati, secondo che è scritto: Iddio ha dato loro uno spirito di stordimento, degli occhi per non vedere e degli orecchi per non udire, fino a questo giorno.
|
8 as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes so that they could not see and ears so that they could not hear, to this very day."
|
|
9 E Davide dice: La loro mensa sia per loro un laccio, una rete, un inciampo, e una retribuzione.
|
9 And David says: "May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
|
|
10 Siano gli occhi loro oscurati in guisa che non veggano, e piega loro del continuo la schiena.
|
10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever."
|
|
11 Io dico dunque: Hanno essi così inciampato da cadere? Così non sia; ma per la loro caduta la salvezza è giunta ai Gentili per provocar loro a gelosia.
|
11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious.
|
|
12 Or se la loro caduta è la ricchezza del mondo e la loro diminuzione la ricchezza de’ Gentili, quanto più lo sarà la loro pienezza!
|
12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
|
|
13 Ma io parlo a voi, o Gentili. In quanto io sono apostolo dei Gentili, glorifico il mio ministerio,
|
13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry
|
|
14 per veder di provocare a gelosia quelli del mio sangue, e di salvarne alcuni.
|
14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them.
|
|
15 Poiché, se la loro reiezione è la riconciliazione del mondo, che sarà la loro riammissione, se non una vita d’infra i morti?
|
15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
|
|
16 E se la primizia è santa, anche la massa è santa; e se la radice è santa, anche i rami son santi.
|
16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
|
|
17 E se pure alcuni de’ rami sono stati troncati, e tu, che sei olivastro, sei stato innestato in luogo loro e sei divenuto partecipe della radice e della grassezza dell’ulivo,
|
17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,
|
|
18 non t’insuperbire contro ai rami; ma, se t’insuperbisci, sappi che non sei tu che porti la radice, ma la radice che porta te.
|
18 do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
|
|
19 Allora tu dirai: Sono stati troncati dei rami perché io fossi innestato.
|
19 You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in."
|
|
20 Bene: sono stati troncati per la loro incredulità, e tu sussisti per la fede; non t’insuperbire, ma temi.
|
20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.
|
|
21 Perché se Dio non ha risparmiato i rami naturali, non risparmierà neppur te.
|
21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.
|
|
22 Vedi dunque la benignità e la severità di Dio; la severità verso quelli che son caduti; ma verso te la benignità di Dio, se pur tu perseveri nella sua benignità; altrimenti, anche tu sarai reciso.
|
22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
|
|
23 Ed anche quelli, se non perseverano nella loro incredulità, saranno innestati; perché Dio è potente da innestarli di nuovo.
|
23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
|
|
24 Poiché se tu sei stato tagliato dall’ulivo per sua natura selvatico, e sei stato contro natura innestato nell’ulivo domestico, quanto più essi, che son dei rami naturali, saranno innestati nel lor proprio ulivo?
|
24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
|
|
25 Perché, fratelli, non voglio che ignoriate questo mistero, affinché non siate presuntuosi; che cioè, un induramento parziale s’è prodotto in Israele, finché sia entrata la pienezza dei Gentili;
|
25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
|
|
26 e così tutto Israele sarà salvato, secondo che è scritto: Il liberatore verrà da Sion;
|
26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
|
|
27 Egli allontanerà da Giacobbe l’empietà; e questo sarà il mio patto con loro, quand’io torrò via i loro peccati.
|
27 And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."
|
|
28 Per quanto concerne l’Evangelo, essi sono nemici per via di voi; ma per quanto concerne l’elezione, sono amati per via dei loro padri;
|
28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,
|
|
29 perché i doni e la vocazione di Dio sono senza pentimento.
|
29 for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.
|
|
30 Poiché, siccome voi siete stati in passato disubbidienti a Dio ma ora avete ottenuto misericordia per la loro disubbidienza,
|
30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience,
|
|
31 così anch’essi sono stati ora disubbidienti, onde, per la misericordia a voi usata, ottengano essi pure misericordia.
|
31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God's mercy to you.
|
|
32 Poiché Dio ha rinchiuso tutti nella disubbidienza per far misericordia a tutti.
|
32 For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.
|
|
33 O profondità della ricchezza e della sapienza e della conoscenza di Dio! Quanto inscrutabili sono i suoi giudizi, e incomprensibili le sue vie!
|
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!
|
|
34 Poiché: Chi ha conosciuto il pensiero del Signore? O chi è stato il suo consigliere?
|
34 "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?"
|
|
35 O chi gli ha dato per primo, e gli sarà contraccambiato?
|
35 "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?"
|
|
36 Poiché da lui, per mezzo di lui e per lui son tutte le cose. A lui sia la gloria in eterno. Amen.
|
36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
