Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus and an apostle chosen and called by God to preach his Good News. 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God--
The Good News was promised long ago by God through his prophets, as written in the Holy Scriptures. 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
It is about his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ: as to his humanity, he was born a descendant of David; 3 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David,
as to his divine holiness, he was shown with great power to be the Son of God by being raised from death. 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him God gave me the privilege of being an apostle for the sake of Christ, in order to lead people of all nations to believe and obey. 5 Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.
This also includes you who are in Rome, whom God has called to belong to Jesus Christ. 6 And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
And so I write to all of you in Rome whom God loves and has called to be his own people: May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. 7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because the whole world is hearing about your faith. 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world.
God is my witness that what I say is true - the God whom I serve with all my heart by preaching the Good News about his Son. God knows that I remember you 9 God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you
every time I pray. I ask that God in his good will may at last make it possible for me to visit you now. 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you.
For I want very much to see you, in order to share a spiritual blessing with you to make you strong. 11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong--
What I mean is that both you and I will be helped at the same time, you by my faith and I by yours. 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith.
You must remember, my friends, that many times I have planned to visit you, but something has always kept me from doing so. I want to win converts among you also, as I have among other Gentiles. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
For I have an obligation to all peoples, to the civilized and to the savage, to the educated and to the ignorant. 14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish.
So then, I am eager to preach the Good News to you also who live in Rome. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome.
I have complete confidence in the gospel; it is God's power to save all who believe, first the Jews and also the Gentiles. 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.
For the gospel reveals how God puts people right with himself: it is through faith from beginning to end. As the scripture says, "The person who is put right with God through faith shall live." 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."
God's anger is revealed from heaven against all the sin and evil of the people whose evil ways prevent the truth from being known. 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,
God punishes them, because what can be known about God is plain to them, for God himself made it plain. 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the things that God has made. So those people have no excuse at all! 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
They know God, but they do not give him the honor that belongs to him, nor do they thank him. Instead, their thoughts have become complete nonsense, and their empty minds are filled with darkness. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
They say they are wise, but they are fools; 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools
instead of worshiping the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortals or birds or animals or reptiles. 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
And so God has given those people over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do shameful things with each other. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.
They exchange the truth about God for a lie; they worship and serve what God has created instead of the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever! Amen. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.
Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural acts. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.
In the same way the men give up natural sexual relations with women and burn with passion for each other. Men do shameful things with each other, and as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their wrongdoing. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
Because those people refuse to keep in mind the true knowledge about God, he has given them over to corrupted minds, so that they do the things that they should not do. 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.
They are filled with all kinds of wickedness, evil, greed, and vice; they are full of jealousy, murder, fighting, deceit, and malice. They gossip 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,
and speak evil of one another; they are hateful to God, insolent, proud, and boastful; they think of more ways to do evil; they disobey their parents; 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;
they have no conscience; they do not keep their promises, and they show no kindness or pity for others. 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
They know that God's law says that people who live in this way deserve death. Yet, not only do they continue to do these very things, but they even approve of others who do them. 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
