New International Version NIV
14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, Thus says your brother Israel, You know all the travail that has befallen us:
14
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardships that have come on us.
15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers:
15
Our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors,
16 and when we cried to Yahweh, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border.
16
but when we cried out to the LORD, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. “Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.
17 Please let us pass through your land: we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go along the king's highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border.
17
Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”
18 Edom said to him, You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.
18
But Edom answered: “You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.”
19 The children of Israel said to him, We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of your water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price of it: let me only, without [doing] anything [else], pass through on my feet.
19
The Israelites replied: “We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else.”
20 He said, You shall not pass through. Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
20
Again they answered: “You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: why Israel turned away from him.
21
Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from them.
