View In My Bible

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A "maskil."

1 We have heard with our ears,1 O God; our fathers have told us2 what you did in their days, in days long ago.3 2 With your hand you drove out4 the nations and planted5 our fathers; you crushed6 the peoples and made our fathers flourish.7 3 It was not by their sword8 that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand,9 your arm,10 and the light11 of your face, for you loved12 them. 4 You are my King13 and my God,14 who decreesa victories15 for Jacob. 5 Through you we push back16 our enemies; through your name we trample17 our foes. 6 I do not trust in my bow,18 my sword does not bring me victory; 7 but you give us victory19 over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.20 8 In God we make our boast21 all day long,22 and we will praise your name forever.23 "Selah" 9 But now you have rejected24 and humbled us;25 you no longer go out with our armies.26 10 You made us retreat27 before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered28 us. 11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep29 and have scattered us among the nations.30 12 You sold your people for a pittance,31 gaining nothing from their sale. 13 You have made us a reproach32 to our neighbors,33 the scorn34 and derision35 of those around us. 14 You have made us a byword36 among the nations; the peoples shake their heads37 at us. 15 My disgrace38 is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame39 16 at the taunts40 of those who reproach and revile41 me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.42 17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten43 you or been false to your covenant. 18 Our hearts had not turned44 back; our feet had not strayed from your path. 19 But you crushed45 us and made us a haunt for jackals46 and covered us over with deep darkness.47 20 If we had forgotten48 the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,49 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?50 22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep51 to be slaughtered.52 23 Awake,53 O Lord! Why do you sleep?54 Rouse yourself !55 Do not reject us forever.56 24 Why do you hide your face57 and forget58 our misery and oppression?59 25 We are brought down to the dust;60 our bodies cling to the ground. 26 Rise up61 and help us; redeem62 us because of your unfailing love.63
