Jeremías 44:16-26

16 —¡No escucharemos tus mensajes del Señor
!

17 Haremos lo que se nos antoje. Quemaremos incienso y derramaremos ofrendas líquidas a la reina del cielo tanto como nos guste, tal como nosotros, nuestros antepasados, nuestros reyes y funcionarios han hecho siempre en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén. ¡Pues en aquellos días teníamos comida en abundancia, estábamos bien económicamente y no teníamos problemas!

18 Pero desde que dejamos de quemar incienso a la reina del cielo y dejamos de rendirle culto con ofrendas líquidas, nos hemos visto en tremendos problemas y hemos muerto por guerra y hambre.

19 »Además —agregaron las mujeres—, ¿acaso crees que quemábamos incienso y derramábamos las ofrendas líquidas a la reina del cielo y hacíamos pasteles con su imagen sin el conocimiento y la ayuda de nuestros esposos? ¡Por supuesto que no!

20 Entonces Jeremías les dijo a todos, tanto hombres como mujeres que le habían dado esa respuesta:

21 —¿Acaso piensan que el Señor
no sabía que ustedes y sus antepasados, sus reyes y funcionarios y todo el pueblo quemaban incienso a los ídolos en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén?

22 Fue porque el Señor
no podía soportar más todas las cosas repugnantes que él convirtió su tierra en objeto de maldición —una ruina desolada sin habitantes— como sucede hoy.

23 A ustedes les ocurrieron todas estas cosas horribles porque quemaron incienso a los ídolos y pecaron contra el Señor
. Se negaron a obedecerlo y no han seguido sus instrucciones, sus decretos ni sus leyes.

24 Luego Jeremías les dijo a todos, incluidas las mujeres: «Escuchen este mensaje del Señor
, todos ustedes ciudadanos de Judá que viven en Egipto.

25 Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: “Ustedes y sus esposas han dicho: ‘Guardaremos nuestras promesas de quemar incienso y derramar ofrendas líquidas a la reina del cielo’ y por sus hechos han demostrado que hablaban en serio. ¡Así que vayan, cumplan sus promesas y votos a ella!”.

26 »Sin embargo, escuchen este mensaje del Señor
todos ustedes, los judíos que ahora viven en Egipto: “He jurado por mi gran nombre —dice el Señor
— que mi nombre ya no será pronunciado por ningún judío en la tierra de Egipto. Ninguno de ustedes podrá invocar mi nombre ni usar el siguiente juramento: ‘Tan cierto como que el Señor
Soberano vive’.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 44

This chapter contains a sermon of Jeremiah's to the Jews in Egypt, reproving them for their idolatry there; their answer to it, expressing their resolution to continue in their idolatrous practices; and a denunciation of judgments upon them, of which a sign is given. The sermon begins with observing to them the destruction of Jerusalem, and the causes of it, idolatry and contempt of the prophets, Jer 44:1-6; then follows an expostulation with the present Jews for doing the same things, and exposing themselves and their posterity to the same punishment, Jer 44:7-10; upon which they are threatened with the sore judgments of God that should come upon them, and cut them off in general, Jer 44:11-14; yet such were the impudence and obstinacy of this people, that they declared they would not hearken to the prophet, but persist in their idolatry; it having been better with them when they practised it than when they left it, Jer 44:15-19; to which the prophet replies by observing, that for the idolatry of their fathers their land was become a desolation and a curse, as at this day, Jer 44:20-23; and assures them that destruction would come from the Lord upon them, which he had swore to, Jer 44:24-28; and a sign of it is given; the delivery of the king of Egypt into the hand of the king of Babylon, Jer 44:29,30.
