Their tombs1 will remain their housesa forever, their dwellings for endless generations,2 though they hadb named3 lands after themselves.
But man, despite his riches, does not endure;4 he isc like the beasts that perish.513
This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,6 and of their followers, who approve their sayings. "Selah"
Like sheep they are destined7 for the grave,d8 and death will feed on them. The upright will rule9 over them in the morning; their forms will decay in the grave,e far from their princely mansions.
But God will redeem my lifef from the grave;10 he will surely take me to himself.11 "Selah"
Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;
for he will take nothing12 with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.1318
Though while he lived he counted himself blessed--14 and men praise you when you prosper--
he will join the generation of his fathers,15 who will never see the light16 [of life].
A man who has riches without understanding17 is like the beasts that perish.18
