To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder1 and a witness2 of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:32
Be shepherds of God's flock4 that is under your care, watching over them--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;5 not pursuing dishonest gain,6 but eager to serve;
not lording it over7 those entrusted to you, but being examples8 to the flock.
And when the Chief Shepherd9 appears, you will receive the crown of glory10 that will never fade away.115
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves12 to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility13 toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble and oppressed."a146
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.157
Cast all your anxiety on him16 because he cares for you.178
Be alert and of sober mind.18 Your enemy the devil prowls around19 like a roaring lion20 looking for someone to devour.
Resist him,21 standing firm in the faith,22 because you know that your fellow believers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.2310
And the God of all grace, who called you24 to his eternal glory25 in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,26 will himself restore you and make you strong,27 firm and steadfast.
To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.28
With the help of Silas,b29 whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,30 encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.3113
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.3214
Greet one another with a kiss of love.33 Peace34 to all of you who are in Christ.
