The LORD said to me, "Take a large scroll1 and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz."a22
So I called in Uriah3 the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses4 for me.
Then I made love to the prophetess,5 and she conceived and gave birth to a son.6 And the LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.74
Before the boy knows8 how to say 'My father' or 'My mother,' the wealth of Damascus9 and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.10"
The LORD spoke to me again:
"Because this people has rejected11 the gently flowing waters of Shiloah12 and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah,137
therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters14 of the Euphrates-- the king of Assyria15 with all his pomp.16 It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks178
and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,18 passing through it and reaching up to the neck. Its outspread wings19 will cover the breadth of your land, Immanuelb !"209
Raise the war cry,c21 you nations, and be shattered!22 Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare23 for battle, and be shattered! Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;24 propose your plan, but it will not stand,25 for God is with us.d2611
This is what the LORD says to me with his strong hand upon me,27 warning me not to follow28 the way of this people:
"Do not call conspiracy29 everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear,30 and do not dread it.3113
The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,32 he is the one you are to fear,33 he is the one you are to dread.3414
He will be a holy place;35 for both houses of Israel he will be a stone36 that causes people to stumble37 and a rock that makes them fall.38 And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare.3915
Many of them will stumble;40 they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured."
Bind up this testimony of warning41 and seal42 up God's instruction among my disciples.
I will wait43 for the LORD, who is hiding44 his face from the house of Jacob. I will put my trust in him.4518
Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me.46 We are signs47 and symbols48 in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.49
When someone tells you to consult50 mediums and spiritists,51 who whisper and mutter,52 should not a people inquire53 of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?
Consult God's instruction54 and the testimony of warning.55 If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light56 of dawn.
Distressed and hungry,57 they will roam through the land;58 when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse59 their king and their God.
Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,60 and they will be thrust into utter darkness.61
