How the Holy Spirit Is Doing a Home Makeover on Our Hearts

One of the most well-known Christian evangelists in the world was Billy Graham. I remember the day he passed away. The week of his funeral, Billy’s hearse drove from his hometown of Black Mountain, North Carolina to Charlotte. The cars drove past my hometown and thousands upon thousands of people parked on the side of the highways as firefighters flew American flags over all of the bridges. I stood there on the side of the road honestly sobbing my eyes out at the clear impact of this man’s life. He was someone who said, “yes” to God, and I was missing his presence in the world. Billy was going to be buried next to his wife Ruth who passed on before him.
Ruth was equally passionate about sharing Jesus with the world. She was in many ways the backbone of a lot of Billy’s ministry. She supported him in ways we will never know. One of my favorite stories about Ruth Graham is that her tombstone reads, “End of Construction - Thank you for your patience.” When we think about how we are under spiritual construction today, may we remember that even those we look up to in the faith are being sanctified.
The only person on this earth who has never needed heart reconstruction was Jesus Christ. He lived the perfect life. We are being beautified through His choice to come and die for our sins and to be raised to life on the third day. He won the victory against death. Now we have a choice if we say yes to Him to make our hearts His Spirit’s home. We have a God who does not live in a temple built by men, but in human hearts.
What beauty do you feel like you are missing from within? How is the Holy Spirit working in your heart? You might just see the bones of the project, but God sees the finished work. Don’t give up on surrendering to the Holy Spirit each day. He is doing a beautiful work in you and He will bring it to completion.
