Which Book of the Bible Best Explains the Gospel?

Paul reiterates the importance of faith alone once again in Romans 5:1-2 saying, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

The death of Jesus is the sacrifice for sin as found in Romans 5:8, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This death was not in vain. It was the once and for all sacrifice for the sins of the world.

Romans 6 through 8 gives a clear presentation of the believer’s new life in Christ. The process of salvation by faith is explained in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Eternal life is only found through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Romans 8:1-2 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Freedom comes when we put our faith in Christ alone. This freedom is not freedom to sin more, but rather freedom from the bondage of sin and shame. No longer do we have to carry the weight of sin, but all sin was paid for by Jesus Christ on the cross. This sets all who believe by faith, free.

Every person has a choice to respond to the gospel. In Romans 9 through 11, Paul wraps up this gospel presentation by making it very clear how to move forward by saying yes I believe the gospel by faith. In Romans 10:9 he says, “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” And again in Romans 10:13 he says, “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”

This portion of Romans hits home the gospel message by giving the reader a clear path forward. When a person encounters the gospel of Jesus Christ, the question lingering within is often – what do I do now? Paul answers this question clearly by saying, “call on the name of the Lord.”

While the entirety of the Bible points and nods to the gospel, Romans shows the way to Christ for all. Some call a certain series of verses in Romans “the Romans Road.” And I think it’s accurate to say the road to Jesus is clearly paved in the book of Romans.

When a seeker reads the pages of Romans, they are not left wondering what they must do to be saved. They are given clear facts and a step of faith to take. The step is simply to call on the Lord by faith for salvation. The gospel truly is good news for you and me. Share it with someone today!
