7 Ways a Titus 2 Woman Lives to Honor God

There are few places in the Bible where we get a glimpse of things that describe a woman of godly character. Proverbs 31 and Titus 2 are two that stand out to me. They both give us an exhaustive list that make even the most godly woman feel a little challenged and overwhelmed. But when it comes down to it, the lists can be summed up in a few words. Today, let’s look at Titus 2.

Fearing and loving God leads a woman to live a Titus 2 life. While I strive to be a godly woman who loves the Lord, I fall short daily. This list in Titus 2:3-10 gives us a good outline to follow and apply to our lives as we live to love Jesus more.

1.  A Titus 2 woman reveres God through her behavior

The first verse that addresses the woman identifies her as “older.” Whether that is an older twenty-something or an older eighty-something, is not worth debating. The key is for women to be always mindful of their life as an example to those coming behind her. The way we carry ourselves, the choices we make, the things we endorse, and the beliefs we are willing to speak up about matter. The most important measure of a woman’s behavior is that it honors God.

2. A Titus 2 woman guards her words and discerns when to speak

Sometimes women like to share their opinions and thoughts more than necessary. With the world of social media at our fingertips, it’s easy to hop on Facebook or Instagram and type out thoughts and opinions of the latest hot topic. The Titus 2 woman knows when to keep her mouth quiet and when to speak the truth in love. Because of this, a Titus 2 woman knows her indulgence in God is more fulfilling than indulging in things of this world. There are plenty of things that can help us escape the pressures of the world. But the Titus 2 woman doesn’t live to escape. She lives to pursue God more. She knows the pleasures of this world will not satisfy her soul.

3. A Titus 2 woman teaches good things through her life and actions

You’ve heard the old saying, “actions speak louder than words.” The Titus 2 woman lives in a way that teaches others the love of God through her actions. While her words also hold weight and are valuable, she knows the value of her actions affect those around her. She uses this responsibility to teach good and not evil.

4. A Titus 2 woman trains younger women to love their families

The power struggle between men and women is at an all-time high in our culture. The Titus 2 woman reminds those coming behind her that God placed the husband in the family as the authority. She teaches the women she leads what it looks like to love her husband and gives value to the role of the wife. Likewise, a Titus 2 woman trains younger women on how to care for their children. The role of the mother in the lives of her children is a gift. The Titus 2 woman trains the women in her life how to love her children well.

5. A Titus 2 woman practices self-control

Self-control is one of the most difficult spiritual disciplines of the Titus 2 woman. It’s the struggle between the flesh and spirit. The Titus 2 woman who lives under the Spirit’s control works hard to surrender her soul day by day to the wisdom of the Word.

Through that submission, a Titus 2 woman will also live with a pure heart. Her motive is to bring God glory and not herself. She recognizes her selfish desires and fights against the attack of the enemy to lift herself up. Her pure heart is known to those around her and humility seeps from her life.

6. A Titus 2 woman tends to her heart and home

There is much debate about a woman’s place in the world. Some woman will fight for equality and power. The longing for a place and space in the world drives many to push ahead no matter the cost. A Titus 2 woman finds satisfaction where God has her. Her heart is important to her and she checks it often to make sure she is in tune with her Savior. She knows the importance of tending to the hearts in her home. Without the foundation of the family being strong and secure, woman will flail for security. The Titus 2 woman is secure and willing to surrender to God wherever He tells her.

In the same way, a Titus 2 woman submits to her husband. Submission is not a dirty word. It is a word that brings safety. There is sweet security in the heart of a Titus 2 woman when she submits to the God-given authority of her husband.

7. A Titus 2 woman is blameless and gives no reason for God’s Word to be mocked

She doesn’t blatantly give others a reason to question her motives, heart, or the authority of God’s Word. She abides with Christ and follows His leading. She lives to honor God with her entire being. Through honoring God, a Titus 2 woman will model dignity, integrity and wisdom. She is an example of a high measure of godliness. She lives a faithful life that shines the love and light of Jesus.

Whew! Can you even imagine living this surrendered, this pure? It’s beautiful to think about, but so much harder to do. So what is one to do with this list that seems too high to achieve?

We hold these traits of godly behavior and wise decision making with our deepest heart’s desire to make a difference in the world and we surrender day by day. A heart that surrenders to the Savior lives this example in small ways. Those small ways are big in the eyes of God.

We might not be perfect, but we can strive to live pure. The next generation is looking more than ever before at women and their roles and character qualities. Titus 2 women don’t fight for the spotlight or demand their presence be acknowledged. They shine the light of Jesus so brightly that the people around them take notice and want to honor and follow God like they are. Their beauty and character flows from within and shines without.
