10 Fun and Easy VBS Themes Kids Will Love
Share

If the church doors were open, I was there. Half my family members were deacons, my grandmother and mother were Sunday School teachers, and I was occasionally the pianist. Not only that, but I was a Christian school kid, born and bred to know every Vacation Bible School theme there is.
And what a sweet legacy, for my summers to be filled with God’s truth and wisdom. Over thirty years into this life, I still recall some of the songs and dances, crafts and snacks, and nights of encouragement and truth I found in Vacation Bible School.
In fact, my mother often directed VBS, granting me the chance to understand the ins and outs of ensuring this week-long outreach program not only ran efficiently but ran effectively in a spiritual sense.
As your church prepares to host VBS this summer, I pray the VBS themes below spark creativity, encouragement, and fun as you share the gospel with the children in your community:
What Are the Best VBS Themes for This Year?
Children’s Ministry Deals recently shared the best 2026 VBS themes, and many of them aren’t your typical, traditional themes. The titles are shorter, most of the themes are a bit quirkier, and the opportunities to spark new fun in VBS are plenty.

- Snowball Mountain Challenge
- Galaxy

Budget-Friendly VBS Themes for Any Size Church
When trying to host a budget-friendly VBS, it’s not so much about finding a cheaper theme as it is creatively strategizing. Of course, if no one is writing all of the curriculum from scratch—and trust me, that’s a ton of work—you must buy the pre-made curriculum.
Outside that initial purchase, you can gather your team together to look at the theme’s decorations, crafts, snacks, games, and lessons to see where you can save some money. That might look like:
- asking church members to donate decorations, craft supplies, recreation items, etc.
- checking with other local churches that formerly hosted the same or a similar theme
- maximizing talent in your church (for example, finding someone who can paint a banner so you don’t have to purchase one)
- utilizing Facebook marketplace and even yard sales for the more basic decorations
In a culture that loves to thrift, this is the perfect year to maximize your church’s budget and save money without compromising the look and feel of your VBS theme.
Remember, it’s wonderful to save money, but this is also a ministry. It’s an outreach program that requires spending some money. Little souls are worth presenting a wonderful, well-put-together program.
Choosing the Right VBS Theme for Your Church
It’s important to identify the right VBS theme for your church, but how do you know which is best? Consider the church members who have already volunteered to serve. Gather them together, along with your church’s children’s director, and have everyone go through the list of options together.
Consider which Christian organizations have written and produced the curriculum, and see if any of the lessons presented best align with the style of teaching that your children’s ministry already produces.
Find out which themes other local churches are hosting so no one is overlapping their outreach opportunities, and don’t forget to look back over the past several years of your church’s VBS themes to ensure you aren’t repeating anything.
Last, but most important, pray. Let God guide the decision as you and your VBS staff prepare to share Christ’s love with tiny souls.
How Can You Adapt a VBS Theme for Different Age Groups?
But what about the souls at VBS that aren’t quite as tiny, the preteen and teenage participants? Of course, they won’t be interested in the silly songs and all the dances. They won’t care if the snack is in the shape of a jungle animal. They certainly won’t want to make a popsicle stick craft either.
As someone who served in youth ministry for several years, I encourage you to let the middle and high school students gather throughout the VBS week, but don’t place them in a rotation where they must participate the way the other elementary students are.
Let the youth group leaders and volunteers curate lessons that are centered on the same nightly Scriptures as the VBS curriculum, but let them order a pizza, play pool, and host their own style of VBS.
Encourage the older kids to meet in the opening and closing assembly, reminding them of the example they set for the younger kids, but don’t force a sixteen-year-old boy to “enjoy” the same style of VBS learning as a five-year-old girl.
Remember, it’s more about reaching individual hearts than forcing an identical curriculum on everyone.
A Prayer for as You Prepare for VBS
Consider this prayer as you prepare for this year’s VBS:
Father, as we consider the right theme, where to place which volunteers, how to budget, and, most importantly, how to reach the hearts and souls of young people in our community, may you be our Guide. Encourage us and equip us to host a beautiful outreach for those in our town, and may we see this opportunity as a blessing, as a way to offer joy, peace, and the great news of your salvation to the next generation. We praise you, Lord, for this sweet opportunity. Amen.
