1 Samuel 26:10

And David said furthermore
In order to make Abishai easy, and prevent his doing what he proposed:

[as] the Lord liveth;
which was the form of an oath, made to assure Abishai of the truth of what follows, and therefore he need not be hasty to put Saul to death, since it would not be long before he should die, in one or other of the three following ways: either

the Lord shall smite him;
suddenly, which the Jews call cutting off, or death by the hand of heaven, by the immediate hand of God:

or his day shall come to die;
the time appointed for him to die a natural death, of some disease common to men:

or he shall descend into battle, and perish;
which was commonly reckoned death, casual or accidental, and in which last way Saul did die, ( 1 Samuel 31:3 1 Samuel 31:4 ) .

8 Entonces Abisai dijo a David: Hoy Dios ha entregado a tu enemigo en tu mano; ahora pues, déjame clavarlo a la tierra de un solo golpe; no tendré que darle por segunda vez.

9 Pero David dijo a Abisai: No lo mates, pues, ¿quién puede extender su mano contra el ungido del SEÑOR y quedar impune?

10 Dijo también David: Vive el SEÑOR, que ciertamente el SEÑOR lo herirá, o llegará el día en que muera, o descenderá a la batalla y perecerá.

11 No permita el SEÑOR que yo extienda mi mano contra el ungido del SEÑOR; pero ahora, te ruego, toma la lanza que está a su cabecera y la vasija de agua, y vámonos.

12 Tomó, pues, David la lanza y la vasija de agua de junto a la cabecera de Saúl, y se fueron; pero nadie lo vio ni lo supo, tampoco nadie se despertó, pues todos estaban dormidos, ya que un sueño profundo de parte del SEÑOR había caído sobre ellos.
