But he perceived their craftiness
Knowing what was in them, and being a discerner of the thoughts and intents of their hearts, he clearly saw that their view was either, that they might have a charge against him to the Roman governor, should he declare against payment of tribute; or that they might expose him to the people of the Jews, should he assert the lawfulness of it:

and said unto them, why tempt ye me?
with this ensnaring question.

21 Y le preguntaron, diciendo: Maestro, sabemos que hablas y enseñas rectamente, y no te guías por las apariencias, sino que enseñas con verdad el camino de Dios.

22 ¿Nos es lícito pagar impuesto al César, o no?

23 Pero El, percibiendo su astucia, les dijo:

24 Mostradme un denario . ¿De quién es la imagen y la inscripción que lleva? Y ellos le dijeron: Del César.

25 Entonces El les dijo: Pues dad al César lo que es del César, y a Dios lo que es de Dios.
