26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you. What an amazing teaching! All of us desire that men speak well of us. Yet here Jesus says that if they do, we shall not be blessed.

Why? Because men of the world do not speak well of those who truly belong to Christ, who truly belong to the kingdom of heaven. Darkness hates the light (John 3:19-20). The world—that is, worldly men—hated Christ. Therefore, the world will also hate His disciples (see John 15:1819 and comment).

Therefore, if the world speaks well of us, then we should worry lest we are not truly following in Christ’s steps.20 We must examine ourselves. The world follows after and praises false prophets. Worldly men praise those who do not condemn their sin, who do not call on them to repent. Worldly men praise those who live like they do. Let us beware of the praise of the world!
