CHAPTER 5

The Calling of the First Disciples (5:1-11)

(Matthew 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20)

1-3 In these verses Luke describes how Jesus called His first four disciples. Mark’s description is a shorter version (see Mark 1:16-20).

Jesus came to the Lake of Gennesaret, that is, the Sea of Galilee. At first, Jesus preached to the crowd from Simon’s (Peter’s) boat. Peter and the others with him were doubtless amazed at His teaching like everyone else was.

4-5 Therefore, when Jesus gave Peter an unusual and seemingly futile command, Peter was ready to obey. Jesus said, “… let down the nets.” But Peter knew that they couldn’t catch anything. He and his colleagues had been fishing all night and had caught nothing. And Jesus wasn’t even a fisherman; He was a carpenter!

Many are the pastors and preachers who labor long and hard and “catch” nothing. But Christ continues to say: “Let down your nets.” One day there will be fish.

6-7 Then Jesus performed a miracle. When they pulled in their nets, they were so full of fish that it began to break.

8 Then Peter realized that Jesus had power over nature; He had God’s power. He was the Lord. And Peter felt his own unworthiness and sinfulness in the presence of such a man as Jesus (Isaiah 6:5).

Go away,” Peter said to Jesus. “I am not worthy to remain in your presence. I am a sinful man.

Peter was no more sinful than other men. Compared with Jesus, who was without sin, we are all sinful men who are not worthy to come into His presence. If there is anyone who does not feel this unworthiness, this sinfulness, then that person has not known Jesus.
