CHAPTER 8

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons (8:1–36)

1–34 This chapter describes the carrying out of all the instructions God had given Moses earlier concerning the ordination, or CONSECRATION, of priests (see Exodus 29:1–37 and comment). The garments (verse 1) have been described in Exodus Chapter 28. The anointing oil (verses 1,10–13) and its uses have been described in Exodus30:22–33.

35–36 At the end of the ordination proceedings, Moses gave Aaron and his sons a solemn warning: “. . . do what the LORD requires, so you will not die” (verse 35). To fail to do what the Lord requires is to sin, and the wages of sin is death (Romans6:23). Those who hold positions of responsibility will not escape the punishment for sin; indeed, their punishment will be greater because they have greater knowledge (Luke 12:47–48; James 3:1).

As we shall soon see, Moses solemn warning went unheeded, and the dreadful consequences of disobedience came to pass (see Leviticus 10:1–2).
