This series of commentaries is building a reputation for being rich in biblical understanding and pastoral insights. This current volume on the Gospel of Luke is no different. Thabiti understands the text of the Gospel and makes application of the text with a soulful conscience held captive by the text. Students of the Gospel of Luke will find a faithful teacher in this refreshingly new volume on the old, old story.

While reading Thabiti’s commentary on Luke, I kept saying to myself, we really needed this commentary and we really needed it to be written by Thabiti. Thabiti’s expositional prowess and pastoral focus, along with vivid and lively illustrations, make this commentary a must read for any study of the Gospel of Luke. Pastors, Sunday school teachers, Bible study leaders, and family worship leaders will all find Thabiti’s work on Luke useful. This commentary on Luke has quickly become a favorite in my library; it will be in yours as well.

Thabiti shows through this book that he is a shepherd. I was being shepherded while reading through it. The way God has gifted him to capture the ancient truth of Scripture and engage very contemporary yet timeless issues is masterful. In a book like Luke where people can feel they have heard everything, seen everything, and know everything, Thabiti frames it in ways that draw us back into the narrative of our Lord’s incarnation as the Son of Man. Every pastor and parishioner needs this in their library! Lastly, I have the added excitement that a black theologian is penning a commentary. I’m thankful for this work and this series that has taken up the challenge to get qualified writers period, but particularly black writers who are trusted to contribute beyond tokenism.

Eric Mason, founder and pastor of Epiphany Fellowship, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I am often asked by members of my church for advice on good commentaries for their personal study. And though I may give them the ones I think that are solid, yet I also want them to discern in their reading what makes this such a good commentary. The feedback I typically get is that the commentary clearly explained the text, gave good historical and cultural background information, and was very practical. This volume on the Gospel of Luke in the Christ-Centered Expositional Commentary series contains these elements. Pastor Thabiti’s exposition of this Gospel account aims at the heart of Luke’s purpose in getting the reader to know Jesus more intimately.
