3:1 Further support for the unity between chaps. 1–9 and 10–13 is the keyword “commend,” which does not occur in a letter written by Paul prior to 2 Corinthians This word occurs throughout the letter (3:1; 4:2; 5:12; 6:4; 10:12,18); that is, in both parts that are said to have arisen separately. In addition, his “you ought to have commended me”—his plaintive climax to the “fool’s speech” (12:11)—ties that part of the letter to all that has gone before.
