Ps 128 title On ascents, see note at Ps 120 title.
128:1-6 This is a companion psalm to Ps 127. The psalmist affirmed the significance of descendants, revisiting the original promise God made to Abraham in Gn 12:1-3.
128:3 Just as Joseph was described as a fruitful vine (Gn 49:22), so a wife who is blessed with children expands the family. Olive trees were known for vitality, strength, productivity, and longevity.
128:5-6 In the ancient Near East, the ultimate earthly blessing would be prosperity for one’s nation, long life, healthy offspring, and peace.
