Mark 4:35-41

Listen to Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Calms a Storm

35 1On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side. ”
36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves 2were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? ”
39 And he awoke and 3rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still! ”And the wind ceased, and 4there was a great calm.
40 He said to them, “Why are you 5so afraid? Have you still no faith? ”
41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, 6“Who then is this, that even 7the wind and the sea obey him? ”

This is the Christian’s Hour. Welcome, I’m Stan Smelser, program host.In this week’s message, from our series; “Only God”, Gene Appel, lead minister with East Side Christian Church in Anaheim, California unpacks how our most significant fears come from the uncertainties that blind-side us throughout our lives.Today, from the Bible’s book of Mark the writer shares how after a very busy day of ministry for Jesus and his disciples, they use a small boat to escape the crowds and go to “refuel” in a more restful place across a local lake. Their crossing starts off very peaceful and relaxing and Jesus even falls asleep. Suddenly an enormous storm overtakes them and in the midst of the storm something incredible, something, life changing takes place. Here’s Gene with the lowdown on how to deal with fear…

Weathering the Storms of Life
Weathering the Storms of Life
Jill Briscoe

Life is full of squalls—sudden unannounced and unexpected storms that can lead us to question if God is in control of our lives. Death, sickness, unemployment, broken relationships, fears and failures are some of the troubles Satan uses to swamp us with doubt, usually when we’re already stressed and exhausted. How do you respond when you’re hit with the squalls of life? Are you like the disciples in Mark 4 who wondered why Jesus slept while their boat was sinking, or do you believe God is in as much control when He’s seemingly asleep as when He’s obviously awake? Do you pray, “Don’t let there be another squall”? Or do you see storms as part of God’s plan for your life?Teaching from the Gospel of Mark, Jill Briscoe addresses the issues of suffering and faith, challenging us to examine our beliefs in God in the midst of trouble.
