Atti 21:9 Meaning and Commentary

Acts 21:9

And the same man had four daughters
So that he was a married man, which may be observed against the Papists, who forbid marriage to ecclesiastics: and they were,

virgins:
not under any vow of virginity, but they had not as yet changed their state of life, and were pure and incorrupt:

which did prophesy;
not explain and interpret Scripture, or preach in public assemblies; for these were not allowed women, neither in the Jewish synagogues, nor in Christian assemblies; but they were endowed with a gift of foretelling future events, as was promised such should have in Gospel times, ( Joel 2:28 ) .

7 E noi, compiendo la navigazione, da Tiro arrivammo a Ptolemaida; e, salutati i fratelli, dimorammo un giorno appresso di loro.
8 E il giorno seguente, essendo partiti, arrivammo a Cesarea; ed entrati in casa di Filippo l’evangelista, ch’era l’uno de’ sette, dimorammo appresso di lui.
9 Or egli avea quattro figliuole vergini, le quali profetizzavano.
10 E, dimorando noi quivi molti giorni, un certo profeta, chiamato per nome Agabo, discese di Giudea.
11 Ed egli, essendo venuto a noi, e presa la cintura di Paolo, se ne legò le mani ed i piedi, e disse: Questo dice lo Spirito Santo: Così legheranno i Giudei in Gerusalemme l’uomo di cui è questa cintura, e lo metteranno nelle mani de’ Gentili.
