John 12:5

Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence
Meaning Roman pence, one of which is, of the value of our money, seven pence halfpenny; so that three hundred pence amount to nine pounds seven shillings and six pence:

and given to the poor?
this was his pretence, and with which he covered himself; his uneasiness was, because it was not sold, and the money put into his hands, as appears by what follows.

3 E Maria prese una libbra d’olio odorifero di nardo schietto, di gran prezzo, e ne unse i piedi di Gesù, e li asciugò co’ suoi capelli, e la casa fu ripiena dell’odor dell’olio.
4 Laonde un de’ discepoli d’esso, cioè Giuda Iscariot, figliuol di Simone, il quale era per tradirlo, disse:
5 Perchè non si è venduto quest’olio trecento denari, e non si è il prezzo dato a’ poveri?
6 Or egli diceva questo, non perchè si curasse de’ poveri, ma perciocchè era ladro, ed avea la borsa, e portava ciò che vi si metteva dentro.
7 Gesù adunque disse: Lasciala; ella l’avea guardato per lo giorno della mia imbalsamatura.
