Numbers 33

This is a list of all the places where the Israelites set up camp after they left Egypt in organized groups under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.
At the LORD's command Moses wrote down the places where they went as they traveled. This is the list:
They moved from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover. The Israelites boldly left in full view of all the Egyptians.
The Egyptians were burying all their firstborn sons, whom the LORD had killed in a mighty act of judgment on their gods.
The Israelites moved from Rameses and set up camp at Succoth.
They moved from Succoth and set up camp at Etham, on the edge of the desert.
They moved from Etham and turned back to Pi Hahiroth, east of Baal Zephon, and set up camp near Migdol.
They moved from Pi Hahiroth and went through the middle of the sea into the desert. After they traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they set up camp at Marah.
They moved from Marah and came to Elim. Elim had 12 springs and 70 palm trees, so they set up camp there.
They moved from Elim and set up camp by the Red Sea.
They moved from the Red Sea and set up camp in the Desert of Sin.
They moved from the Desert of Sin and set up camp at Dophkah.
They moved from Dophkah and set up camp at Alush.

They moved from Rissah and set up camp at Kehelathah.
They moved from Kehelathah and set up camp at Mount Shepher.
They moved from Mount Shepher and set up camp at Haradah.
They moved from Haradah and set up camp at Makheloth.
They moved from Makheloth and set up camp at Tahath.
They moved from Tahath and set up camp at Terah.
They moved from Terah and set up camp at Mithcah.
They moved from Mithcah and set up camp at Hashmonah.
They moved from Hashmonah and set up camp at Moseroth.
They moved from Moseroth and set up camp at Bene Jaakan.
They moved from Bene Jaakan and set up camp at Hor Haggidgad.
They moved from Hor Haggidgad and set up camp at Jotbathah.
They moved from Jotbathah and set up camp at Abronah.
They moved from Abronah and set up camp at Ezion Geber.
They moved from Ezion Geber and set up camp at Kadesh in the Desert of Zin.
They moved from Kadesh and set up camp at Mount Hor on the border of Edom.
At the LORD's command the priest Aaron went up on Mount Hor. He died there on the first day of the fifth month in the fortieth year after the Israelites had left Egypt.
Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor.
(The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, which was in Canaan, heard that the Israelites were coming.)
They moved from Mount Hor and set up camp at Zalmonah.
They moved from Zalmonah and set up camp at Punon.
They moved from Punon and set up camp at Oboth.
They moved from Oboth and set up camp at Iye Abarim on the border of Moab.

They moved from the Abarim Mountains and set up camp on the plains of Moab near the Jordan River across from Jericho.
They set up camp on the plains of Moab along the Jordan. Their camp extended from Beth Jeshimoth to Abel Shittim.
The LORD said to Moses on the plains of Moab near the Jordan River across from Jericho,
"Tell the Israelites, 'You will be crossing the Jordan River and entering Canaan.
As you advance, force out all the people who live there. Get rid of all their stone and metal idols, and destroy all their places of worship.
Take possession of the land and live there, because I will give it to you for your own.
Divide the land among your families by drawing lots. Give more land to larger families and less land to smaller ones. The land must be given to each family by drawing lots. Divide it among your ancestors' tribes.
"'But if you do not force out those who live in the land, they will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will constantly fight with you over the land you live in.
Then I will do to you what I planned to do to them.'"

Numbers 33 Commentary

Chapter 33

Encampments of the Israelites. (1-49) The Canaanites to be destroyed. (50-56)

Verses 1-49 This is a brief review of the travels of the children of Israel through the wilderness. It is a memorable history. In their travels towards Canaan they were continually on the remove. Such is our state in this world; we have here no continuing city, and all our removes in this world are but from one part a desert to another. They were led to and fro, forward and backward, yet were all the while under the direction of the pillar of cloud and fire. God led them about, yet led them the right way. The way God takes in bringing his people to himself is always the best way, though it does not always seem to us the nearest way. Former events are mentioned. Thus we ought to keep in mind the providences of God concerning us and families, us and our land, and the many instances of that Divine care which has led us, and fed us, and kept us all our days hitherto. Few periods of our lives can be thought upon, without reminding us of the Lord's goodness, and our own ingratitude and disobedience: his kindness leaves us without excuse for our sins. We could not wish to travel over again the stages we have passed, unless we could hope, by the grace of God, to shun the sins we then committed, and to embrace such opportunities of doing good as we have let slip. Soon will our wanderings end, and our eternal state be fixed beyond recall; how important then is the present moment! Happy are those whom the Lord now guides with his counsel, and will at length receive to his glory. To this happiness the gospel calls us. Behold now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation. Let sinners seize the opportunity, and flee for refuge to the hope set before them. Let us redeem our time, to glorify God and serve our generation; and he will carry us safely through all, to his eternal kingdom.

Verses 50-56 Now that they were to pass over Jordan, they were entering again into temptation to follow idols; and they are threatened that, if they spared either the idols or the idolaters, their sin would certainly be their punishment. They would foster vipers in their own bosoms. The remnant of the Canaanites, if they made any peace with them, though but for a time, would be pricks in their eyes, and thorns in their sides. We must expect trouble and affliction from whatever sin we indulge; that which we are willing should tempt us, will vex us. It was intended that the Canaanites should be put out of the land; but if the Israelites learned their wicked ways, they also would be put out. Let us hear this and fear. If we do not drive out sin, sin will drive us out. If we are not the death of our lusts, our lusts will be the death of our souls.
