1 Samuel 10

1 Tomando entonces Samuel una ampolla de aceite, la derramó sobre su cabeza, y lo besó, y le dijo: ¿No te ha ungido el SEÑOR por capitán sobre su heredad

2 Hoy, después que te hayas apartado de mí, hallarás dos varones junto al sepulcro de Raquel, en el término de Benjamín en Selsa, los cuales te dirán: Las asnas que habías ido a buscar, se han hallado; tu padre, pues, ha dejado ya el negocio de las asnas, si bien está angustiado por vosotros, diciendo: ¿Qué haré acerca de mi hijo

3 Y como de allí irás más adelante, llegarás a la campiña de Tabor, te saldrán al encuentro tres varones que suben a Dios en Bet-el, llevando uno tres cabritos, el otro tres tortas de pan, y el tercero un cántaro de vino

4 Los cuales, luego que te hayan saludado, te darán dos panes, los que tomarás de manos de ellos

5 De allí vendrás al collado de Dios donde está la guarnición de los filisteos; y cuando entres allá en la ciudad encontrarás una compañía de profetas que descienden del lugar alto, y delante de ellos salterio, adufe, flauta, y arpa, y ellos profetizando

6 Y el Espíritu del SEÑOR te prosperará, y profetizarás con ellos, y serás mudado en otro varón

7 Y cuando te hubieren sobrevenido estas señales, haz según lo que te encontrare a la mano, porque Dios está contigo

8 Y bajarás delante de mí a Gilgal; y luego descenderé yo a ti para sacrificar holocaustos, e inmolar víctimas pacíficas. Tú me esperarás siete días, hasta que yo venga a ti, y te enseñe lo que has de hacer

9 Y aconteció que cuando él volteó su hombro para partirse de Samuel, le mudó Dios su corazón; y todas estas señales acaecieron en aquel día

10 Y cuando llegaron allá al collado, he aquí la compañía de los profetas que venía a encontrarse con él, y el Espíritu de Dios lo prosperó, y profetizó entre ellos

11 Y aconteció que, cuando todos los que le conocían de ayer y de anteayer, vieron como profetizaba con los profetas. Y el pueblo decía el uno al otro: ¿Qué le ha sucedido al hijo de Cis? ¿Saúl también entre los profetas

12 Y un varón de allí respondió, y dijo: ¿Y quién es el padre de ellos? Por esta causa se convirtió en proverbio: ¿También Saúl entre los profetas

13 Y cesó de profetizar, y llegó al lugar alto

14 Y un tío de Saúl le dijo a él y a su criado: ¿A dónde fuisteis? Y él respondió: A buscar las asnas; y como vimos que no aparecían, fuimos a Samuel

15 Y dijo el tío de Saúl: Yo te ruego me declares qué os dijo Samuel

16 Y Saúl respondió a su tío: Nos declaró expresamente que las asnas habían aparecido. Mas del negocio del reino, de que Samuel le había hablado, no le descubrió nada

17 Y Samuel convocó el pueblo al SEÑOR en Mizpa

18 y dijo a los hijos de Israel: Así dijo el SEÑOR el Dios de Israel: Yo saqué a Israel de Egipto, y os libré de mano de los egipcios, y de mano de todos los reinos que os afligieron

19 Mas vosotros habéis desechado hoy a vuestro Dios, que os salva de todas vuestras aflicciones y angustias, diciendo: No, sino pon rey sobre nosotros. Ahora, pues, poneos delante del SEÑOR por vuestras tribus y por vuestros millares

20 Y haciendo acercar Samuel todas las tribus de Israel, fue tomada la tribu de Benjamín

21 E hizo llegar la tribu de Benjamín por sus linajes, y fue tomada la familia de Matri; y de ella fue tomado Saúl hijo de Cis. Y cuando le buscaron, no fue hallado

22 Preguntaron, pues, otra vez al SEÑOR, si había aún de venir allí aquel varón. Y respondió el SEÑOR: He aquí que él está escondido entre el bagaje

23 Entonces corrieron, y lo tomaron de allí, y puesto en medio del pueblo, desde el hombro arriba era más alto que todo el pueblo

24 Y Samuel dijo a todo el pueblo: ¿Habéis visto al que ha elegido el SEÑOR, que no hay semejante a él en todo el pueblo? Entonces el pueblo clamó diciendo: ¡Viva el rey

25 Samuel recitó luego al pueblo el derecho del reino, y lo escribió en un libro, el cual guardó delante del SEÑOR

26 Y envió Samuel a todo el pueblo cada uno a su casa. Y Saúl también se fue a su casa en Gabaa, y fueron con él algunos del ejército, el corazón de los cuales Dios había tocado

27 Pero los hijos de Belial dijeron: ¿Cómo nos ha de salvar éste? Y le tuvieron en poco, y no le trajeron presente; mas él disimuló

Chapter 10

Samuel anoints Saul. (1-8) Saul prophesies. (9-16) Saul chosen king. (17-27)

Verses 1-8 The sacred anointing, then used, pointed at the great Messiah, or Anointed One, the King of the church, and High Priest of our profession, who was anointed with the oil of the Spirit, not by measure, but without measure, and above all the priests and princes of the Jewish church. For Saul's further satisfaction, Samuel gives him some signs which should come to pass the same day. The first place he directs him to, was the sepulchre of one of his ancestors; there he must be reminded of his own mortality, and now that he had a crown before him, must think of his grave, in which all his honour would be laid in the dust. From the time of Samuel there appears to have been schools, or places where pious young men were brought up in the knowledge of Divine things. Saul should find himself strongly moved to join with them, and should be turned into another man from what he had been. The Spirit of God changes men, wonderfully transforms them. Saul, by praising God in the communion of saints, became another man, but it may be questioned if he became a new man.

Verses 9-16 The signs Samuel had given Saul, came to pass punctually; he found that God had given him another heart, another disposition of mind. Yet let not an outward show of devotion, and a sudden change for the present, be too much relied on; Saul among the prophets was Saul still. His being anointed was kept private. He leaves it to God to carry on his own work by Samuel, and sits still, to see how the matter will fall.

Verses 17-27 Samuel tells the people, Ye have this day rejected your God. So little fond was Saul now of that power, which soon after, when he possessed it, he could not think of parting with, that he hid himself. It is good to be conscious of our unworthiness and insufficiency for the services to which we are called; but men should not go into the contrary extreme, by refusing the employments to which the Lord and the church call them. The greater part of the people treated the matter with indifference. Saul modestly went home to his own house, but was attended by a band of men whose hearts God disposed to support his authority. If the heart bend at any time the right way, it is because He has touched it. One touch is enough when it is Divine. Others despised him. Thus differently are men affected to our exalted Redeemer. There is a remnant who submit to him, and follow him wherever he goes; they are those whose hearts God has touched, whom he has made willing. But there are others who despise him, who ask, How shall this man save us? They are offended in him, and they will be punished.
