ThenspakeJesus to the multitude,and to hisdisciples,

Saying, The scribesand the PhariseessitinMoses'seat:

Allthereforewhatsoevertheybidyouobserve, that observeanddo; butdonot ye aftertheirworks:for they say, anddonot.

For they bindheavyburdensand grievous to be borne,andlay them onmen'sshoulders;but they themselves willnotmovethem with one of theirfingers.#rl

Butalltheirworks they dofor to be seen of men*: they make broadtheirphylacteries,[a]andenlarge the borders of theirgarments,

Andlove the uppermost roomsatfeasts,and the chief seatsin the synagogues,

Andgreetingsin the markets,and to be calledofmen,Rabbi,Rabbi.

ButbenotyecalledRabbi:foroneisyourMaster, even Christ;andallyearebrethren.

Andcallno man yourfatherupon the earth:foroneisyourFather,which is inheaven.

Neither be ye calledmasters:foroneisyourMaster, even Christ.

But he that is greatest among you shall beyourservant.
12
Andwhosoever shall exalthimself shall be abased; andhe that shall humblehimself shall be exalted.

Butwoe unto you,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!for ye shut up the kingdom of heavenagainstmen:foryeneither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14
Woe unto you,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!for ye devourwidows'houses,and for a pretencemakelongprayer: thereforeye shall receive the greaterdamnation.#rl

Woe unto you,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!for ye compassseaandland to makeoneproselyte,andwhen he is made, ye makehim twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16
Woe unto you, ye blindguides,whichsay, Whosoevershallswearby the temple, it isnothing;butwhosoevershallswearby the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17
Ye foolsandblind:forwhetherisgreater, the gold,or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18
And,Whosoevershallswearby the altar, it isnothing;butwhosoever*swearethby the gift that is uponit, he is guilty.[b]

Ye foolsandblind:forwhether is greater, the gift,or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?#rl

Whoso therefore shall swearby the altar,swearethbyit,andby all thingsthereon*.
21
And whoso shall swearby the temple,swearethbyit,andby him that dwelleththerein.#rl
22
And he that shall swearbyheaven,swearethby the throne of God,andby him that sitteththereon*.

Woe unto you,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!for ye pay tithe of mintandanise[c]andcummin,and have omitted the weightier matters of the law,judgment*, mercy,andfaith:these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the otherundone.
24
Ye blindguides, which strain at a gnat,andswallow a camel.
25
Woe unto you,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!for ye make clean the outside of the cupand of the platter,butwithin they are fullofextortionandexcess.
