Exodus 12:14

14 "This will be a memorial day for you; you will celebrate it as a festival to God down through the generations, a fixed festival celebration to be observed always.

Exodus 12:14 Meaning and Commentary

Exodus 12:14

And this shall be unto you for a memorial
To be remembered, and that very deservedly, for the destruction of the firstborn of the Egyptians, and for the deliverance of the children of Israel out of Egypt, and as memorable a day it is, and much more so, for the redemption of the spiritual Israel by the Messiah; for it was on this selfsame day that he suffered for the redemption and salvation of his people: the Jews not only having a saying,

``that in the month Nisan they were redeemed, and in the month Nisan they will be redeemed F7''

but they expressly say,

``on the same day, the fifteenth of Nisan, Israel is to be redeemed, in the days of the Messiah, as they were redeemed on that day, as it is said, according to the days ( Micah 7:15 ) F8:''

and you shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations;
as the fifteenth day was properly the Chagigah; or festival day, when they made a feast both of the flock and of the herd, of both sheep and oxen, ( Deuteronomy 16:2 )

you shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever;
unto the end of the Jewish economy and church state, until the Messiah come, the true passover, and be sacrificed for us.

Exodus 12:14 In-Context

12 "I will go through the land of Egypt on this night and strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, whether human or animal, and bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am God.
13 The blood will serve as a sign on the houses where you live. When I see the blood I will pass over you - no disaster will touch you when I strike the land of Egypt.
14 "This will be a memorial day for you; you will celebrate it as a festival to God down through the generations, a fixed festival celebration to be observed always.
15 You will eat unraised bread (matzoth) for seven days: On the first day get rid of all yeast from your houses - anyone who eats anything with yeast from the first day to the seventh day will be cut off from Israel.
16 The first and the seventh days are set aside as holy; do no work on those days. Only what you have to do for meals; each person can do that.
