John 19:16 Meaning and Commentary

John 19:16

Then delivered he him therefore
Perceiving he could not by any means work upon them, and that nothing would satisfy them but his death; he therefore passed sentence on him, and gave him up to their will,

unto them to be crucified;
as they requested, and which was done in a judicial way, and all by divine appointment, according to the counsel and foreknowledge of God:

and they took Jesus and led him away;
directly from the judgment hall, out of the city to the place of execution, whither he was led as a lamb to the slaughter, without opening his mouth against God or man; but behaved with the utmost patience, meekness, and resignation.

John 19:16 In-Context

14 It was the preparation day for Passover. The hour was noon. Pilate said to the Jews, "Here is your king."
15 They shouted back, "Kill him! Kill him! Crucify him!" Pilate said, "I am to crucify your king?" The high priests answered, "We have no king except Caesar."
16 Pilate caved in to their demand. He turned him over to be crucified.
17 Carrying his cross, Jesus went out to the place called Skull Hill (the name in Hebrew is Golgotha),
18 where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, Jesus in the middle.
