1 Josafat nombra jueces
Cuando el rey Josafat de Judá regresó a salvo a Jerusalén,

2 Jehú, hijo de Hananí el vidente, salió a recibirlo. «¿Por qué habrías de ayudar a los perversos y amar a los que odian al Señor
? —le preguntó al rey—. Debido a lo que has hecho, el Señor
está muy enojado contigo.

3 Sin embargo, hay algo bueno en ti porque quitaste los postes dedicados a la diosa Asera por todo el territorio y has decidido buscar a Dios».

4 Josafat vivía en Jerusalén pero solía salir a visitar a su gente, y recorría el territorio desde Beerseba hasta la zona montañosa de Efraín, para animar al pueblo a que volviera al Señor
, Dios de sus antepasados.

5 Nombró jueces en las ciudades fortificadas por toda la nación

6 y les dijo: «Piensen siempre con cuidado antes de pronunciar juicio. Recuerden que no juzgan para agradar a la gente sino para agradar al Señor
. Él estará con ustedes cuando entreguen el veredicto para cada caso.

7 Teman al Señor
y juzguen con integridad, porque el Señor
nuestro Dios no tolera que se tuerza la justicia ni que se muestre parcialidad ni que se acepte el soborno».

8 En Jerusalén Josafat nombró a algunos de los levitas y de los sacerdotes y de los jefes de clanes de Israel para que sirvieran como jueces en casos relacionados con las ordenanzas del Señor
y en los conflictos civiles.

9 Estas fueron las instrucciones que les dio: «Ustedes deben actuar siempre con el temor del Señor
, con fidelidad y con un corazón íntegro.

10 Cada vez que les llegue un caso de sus compatriotas que viven en ciudades distantes —ya sea de asesinato o de alguna otra violación de las leyes, los mandatos, los decretos y las ordenanzas de Dios— deben advertirles que no pequen contra el Señor
, para que no se enoje con ustedes ni con ellos. Procedan así y no serán culpables.

11 »Amarías, el sumo sacerdote, tendrá la última palabra en todos los casos que tengan que ver con el Señor
. Zebadías, hijo de Ismael, jefe de la tribu de Judá, tendrá la última palabra en todos los casos civiles. Los levitas los ayudarán a asegurarse de que se haga justicia. Anímense y cumplan con sus deberes y que el Señor
esté con todos los que hacen lo correcto».

Chapter 19

Jehoshaphat visits his kingdom.

- Whenever we return in peace to our houses, we ought to acknowledge God's providence in preserving our going out and coming in. And if we have been kept through more than common dangers, we are, in a special manner, bound to be thankful. Distinguishing mercies lay us under strong obligations. The prophet tells Jehoshaphat he had done very ill in joining Ahab. He took the reproof well. See the effect the reproof had upon him. He strictly searched his own kingdom. By what the prophet said, Jehoshaphat perceived that his former attempts for reformation were well-pleasing to God; therefore he did what was then left undone. It is good when commendations quicken us to our duty. There are diversities of gifts and operations, but all from the same Spirit, and for the public good; and as every one has received the gift, so let him minister the same. Blessed be God for magistrates and ministers, scribes and statesmen, men of books, and men of business. Observe the charge the king gave. They must do all in the fear of the Lord, with a perfect, upright heart. And they must make it their constant care to prevent sin, as an offence to God, and what would bring wrath on the people.

Jehoshaphat returning from the battle at Ramothgilead, was met by a prophet, who reproved him for helping the ungodly, 2Ch 19:1-3, which quickened him to a greater regard for the reformation of his kingdom, 2Ch 19:4, and he set judges in all the cities of Judah, and exhorted them to do justice, 2Ch 19:5-7, and in the city of Jerusalem he appointed priests and Levites for the same purpose, and gave them a strict charge, and animated and encouraged them to perform their office faithfully, 2Ch 19:8-11.
