Deuteronomy 5:23

And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst
of the darkness
The thick darkness, where God was, and with which the mountain was covered, ( Exodus 20:21 )

for the mountain did burn with fire;
which is a reason both why the Lord spoke out of the midst of the fire, the mountain on which he descended burning with it and also for his speaking out of the midst of darkness, because not only a thick cloud covered the mountain, but it was altogether on a smoke, which ascended as the smoke of a furnace, ( Exodus 19:16 Exodus 19:18 )

that ye come near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes and your
elders;
or wise men, as the Targum of Jonathan; by which it appears, that not only the common people were frightened at what they heard and saw on Mount Sinai, but those of the first rank and eminence among them, who were the most famous for their authority and wisdom.

21 »No codicies la esposa de tu prójimo. Tampoco codicies la casa de tu prójimo ni su tierra, ni su siervo, ni su sierva, ni su buey, ni su burro, ni ninguna otra cosa que le pertenezca.

22 »El Señor
les digirió esas palabras a todos ustedes cuando estaban reunidos al pie del monte. Habló con voz fuerte desde en medio del fuego, envuelto en nubes y una densa oscuridad. Eso fue todo lo que dijo en ese momento y escribió sus palabras en dos tablas de piedra y me las dio.

23 »Sin embargo, cuando ustedes escucharon la voz que salía de en medio de la oscuridad mientras el monte ardía en llamas, todos los ancianos y los jefes de las tribus se acercaron

24 y me dijeron: “Mira, el Señor
nuestro Dios nos ha mostrado su gloria y su grandeza, y hemos oído su voz salir de en medio del fuego. Hoy comprobamos que Dios puede hablar con los seres humanos, ¡pero aun así seguimos con vida!

25 Sin embargo, ¿para qué arriesgarnos otra vez a morir? Si el Señor
nuestro Dios vuelve a hablarnos, seguramente moriremos y seremos consumidos por ese imponente fuego.
