Marcos 9

1 Jesús continuó diciendo:

2 La transfiguración
Seis días después, Jesús tomó a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan y los llevó a una montaña alta para estar a solas. Mientras los hombres observaban, la apariencia de Jesús se transformó,

3 y su ropa se volvió blanca resplandeciente, más de lo que cualquier blanqueador terrenal jamás podría lograr.

4 Después aparecieron Elías y Moisés y comenzaron a conversar con Jesús.

5 Pedro exclamó: «Rabí,
¡es maravilloso que estemos aquí! Hagamos tres enramadas como recordatorios:
una para ti, una para Moisés y la otra para Elías».

6 Dijo esto porque realmente no sabía qué otra cosa decir, pues todos estaban aterrados.

7 Luego una nube los cubrió y, desde la nube, una voz dijo: «Este es mi Hijo muy amado. Escúchenlo a él».

8 De pronto, cuando miraban ellos a su alrededor, Moisés y Elías se habían ido, y vieron sólo a Jesús con ellos.

9 Mientras descendían de la montaña, él les dijo que no le contaran a nadie lo que habían visto hasta que el Hijo del Hombre
se levantara de los muertos.

10 Así que guardaron el secreto, pero a menudo se preguntaban qué quería decir con «levantarse de los muertos».

11 Entonces le preguntaron:
—¿Por qué los maestros de la ley religiosa insisten en que Elías debe regresar antes de que venga el Mesías?

12 Jesús contestó:

13 Pero les digo, Elías ya vino, y ellos prefirieron maltratarlo, tal como lo predijeron las Escrituras.

14 Jesús sana a un muchacho endemoniado
Cuando regresaron adonde estaban los demás discípulos, vieron que los rodeaba una gran multitud y que algunos maestros de la ley religiosa discutían con ellos.

15 Cuando la multitud vio a Jesús, todos se llenaron de asombro y corrieron a saludarlo.

16 —preguntó Jesús.

17 Un hombre de la multitud tomó la palabra y dijo:
—Maestro, traje a mi hijo para que lo sanaras. Está poseído por un espíritu maligno que no le permite hablar.

18 Y, siempre que este espíritu se apodera de él, lo tira violentamente al suelo y él echa espuma por la boca, rechina los dientes y se pone rígido.
Así que les pedí a tus discípulos que echaran fuera al espíritu maligno, pero no pudieron hacerlo.

19 Jesús les dijo:

20 Así que se lo llevaron. Cuando el espíritu maligno vio a Jesús, le causó una violenta convulsión al muchacho, quien cayó al piso retorciéndose y echando espuma por la boca.

21 —preguntó Jesús al padre del muchacho.
—Desde que era muy pequeño —contestó él—.

22 A menudo el espíritu lo arroja al fuego o al agua para matarlo. Ten misericordia de nosotros y ayúdanos si puedes.

23 —preguntó Jesús—.

24 Al instante el padre clamó:
—¡Sí, creo, pero ayúdame a superar mi incredulidad!

25 Cuando Jesús vio que aumentaba el número de espectadores, reprendió al espíritu maligno.
—dijo—.

26 Entonces el espíritu gritó, le causó otra convulsión violenta al muchacho y salió de él. El muchacho quedó como muerto. Un murmullo recorrió la multitud: «Está muerto», decía la gente.

27 Pero Jesús lo tomó de la mano, lo levantó, y el muchacho se puso de pie.

28 Más tarde, cuando Jesús quedó a solas en la casa con sus discípulos, ellos le preguntaron:
—¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos expulsar ese espíritu maligno?

29 Jesús contestó:

30 Jesús predice otra vez su muerte
Saliendo de esa región, viajaron por Galilea. Jesús no quería que nadie supiera que él estaba allí,

31 porque deseaba pasar más tiempo con sus discípulos y enseñarles. Les dijo:

32 Ellos no entendieron lo que quería decir, sin embargo, tenían miedo de preguntarle.

33 El más importante en el reino
Después de llegar a Capernaúm e instalarse en una casa, Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos:

34 Pero no le contestaron porque venían discutiendo sobre quién de ellos era el más importante.

35 Jesús se sentó y llamó a los doce discípulos y dijo:

36 Entonces puso a un niño pequeño en medio de ellos. Y, tomándolo en sus brazos, les dijo:

37 «Todo el que recibe de mi parte
a un niño pequeño como este me recibe a mí, y todo el que me recibe, no solo me recibe a mí, sino también a mi Padre, quien me envió».

38 Uso del nombre de Jesús
Juan le dijo a Jesús:
—Maestro, vimos a alguien usar tu nombre para expulsar demonios, pero le dijimos que no lo hiciera, porque no pertenece a nuestro grupo.

39 —dijo Jesús—.

40 Todo el que no está en contra de nosotros está a nuestro favor.

41 Si alguien les da a ustedes incluso un vaso de agua porque pertenecen al Mesías, les digo la verdad, esa persona ciertamente será recompensada.

42 »Si tú haces que uno de estos pequeños que confían en mí caiga en pecado, sería mejor que te arrojaran al mar con una gran piedra de molino atada al cuello.

43 Si tu mano te hace pecar, córtatela. Es preferible entrar en la vida eterna con una sola mano que en el fuego inextinguible del infierno
con las dos manos.

45 Si tu pie te hace pecar, córtatelo. Es preferible entrar en la vida eterna con un solo pie que ser arrojado al infierno con los dos pies.

47 Y si tu ojo te hace pecar, sácatelo. Es preferible entrar en el reino de Dios con un solo ojo que tener los dos ojos y ser arrojado al infierno,

48 “donde los gusanos nunca mueren y el fuego nunca se apaga”
.

49 »Pues cada uno será probado con fuego.

50 La sal es buena para condimentar, pero si pierde su sabor, ¿cómo la harán salada de nuevo? Entre ustedes deben tener las cualidades de la sal y vivir en paz unos con otros.

Chapter 9

The transfiguration. (1-13) An evil spirit cast out. (14-29) The apostles reproved. (30-40) Pain to be preferred to sin. (41-50)

Verses 1-13 Here is a prediction of the near approach Christ's kingdom. A glimpse of that kingdom was given in the transfiguration of Christ. It is good to be away from the world, and alone with Christ: and how good to be with Christ glorified in heaven with all the saints! But when it is well with us, we are apt not to care for others, and in the fulness of our enjoyments, we forget the many wants of our brethren. God owns Jesus, and accepts him as his beloved Son, and is ready to accept us in him. Therefore we must own and accept him as our beloved Saviour, and must give up ourselves to be ruled by him. Christ does not leave the soul, when joys and comforts leave it. Jesus explained to the disciples the prophecy about Elias. This was very suitable to the ill usage of John Baptist.

Verses 14-29 The father of the suffering youth reflected on the want of power in the disciples; but Christ will have him reckon the disappointment to the want of faith. Very much is promised to our believing. If thou canst believe, it is possible that thy hard heart may be softened, thy spiritual diseases may be cured; and, weak as thou art, thou mayest be able to hold out to the end. Those that complain of unbelief, must look up to Christ for grace to help them against it, and his grace will be sufficient for them. Whom Christ cures, he cures effectually. But Satan is unwilling to be driven from those that have been long his slaves, and, when he cannot deceive or destroy the sinner, he will cause him all the terror that he can. The disciples must not think to do their work always with the same ease; some services call for more than ordinary pains.

Verses 30-40 The time of Christ's suffering drew nigh. Had he been delivered into the hands of devils, and they had done this, it had not been so strange; but that men should thus shamefully treat the Son of man, who came to redeem and save them, is wonderful. Still observe that when Christ spake of his death, he always spake of his resurrection, which took the reproach of it from himself, and should have taken the grief of it from his disciples. Many remain ignorant because they are ashamed to inquire. Alas! that while the Saviour teaches so plainly the things which belong to his love and grace, men are so blinded that they understand not his sayings. We shall be called to account about our discourses, and to account for our disputes, especially about being greater than others. Those who are most humble and self-denying, most resemble Christ, and shall be most tenderly owned by him. This Jesus taught them by a sign; whoever shall receive one like this child, receives me. Many have been like the disciples, ready to silence men who have success in preaching to sinners repentance in Christ's name, because they follow not with them. Our Lord blamed the apostles, reminding them that he who wrought miracles in his name would not be likely to hurt his cause. If sinners are brought to repent, to believe in the Saviour, and to live sober, righteous, and godly lives, we then see that the Lord works by the preacher.

Verses 41-50 It is repeatedly said of the wicked, Their worm dieth not, as well as, The fire is never quenched. Doubtless, remorse of conscience and keen self-reflection are this never-dying worm. Surely it is beyond compare better to undergo all possible pain, hardship, and self-denial here, and to be happy for ever hereafter, than to enjoy all kinds of worldly pleasure for a season, and to be miserable for ever. Like the sacrifices, we must be salted with salt; our corrupt affections must be subdued and mortified by the Holy Spirit. Those that have the salt of grace, must show they have a living principle of grace in their hearts, which works out corrupt dispositions in the soul that would offend God, or our own consciences.
