Amós 5

Advertencias y lamentos

1 Oye esta palabra, reino de Israel, este canto fúnebre que por ti entono:

2 «Ha caído la joven Israel,y no volverá a levantarse;postrada en su propia tierra,no hay quien la levante».

3 Así dice el SEÑOR omnipotente al reino de Israel:«La ciudad que salía a la guerra con mil hombresse quedará solo con cien,y la que salía con ciense quedará solo con diez».

4 Así dice el SEÑOR al reino de Israel:«Búsquenme y vivirán.

5 Pero no acudan a Betel,ni vayan a Guilgal,ni pasen a Berseba,porque Guilgal será llevada cautiva,y Betel, reducida a la nada».

6 Busquen al SEÑOR y vivirán,no sea que él caiga como fuegosobre los descendientes de José,fuego que devore a Betelsin que haya quien lo apague.

7 Ustedes convierten el derecho en amarguray echan por tierra la justicia.

8 El SEÑOR hizo las Pléyades y el Orión,convierte en aurora las densas tinieblasy oscurece el día hasta convertirlo en noche.Él convoca las aguas del mary las derrama sobre la tierra.¡Su nombre es el SEÑOR!

9 Él reduce a la nada la fortalezay trae la ruina sobre la plaza fuerte.

10 Ustedes odian al que defiende la justicia en el tribunaly detestan al que dice la verdad.

11 Por eso, como pisotean al desvalidoy le imponen tributo de grano,no vivirán en las casas de piedra labrada que han construido,ni beberán del vino de los selectos viñedos que han plantado.

12 ¡Yo sé cuán numerosos son sus delitos,cuán grandes sus pecados!Ustedes oprimen al justo, exigen sobornoy en los tribunales atropellan al necesitado.

13 Por eso en circunstancias como estas guarda silencio el prudente,porque estos tiempos son malos.

14 Busquen el bien y no el mal, y vivirán;y así estará con ustedes el SEÑOR Dios Todopoderoso,tal como ustedes lo afirman.

15 ¡Odien el mal y amen el bien!Hagan que impere la justicia en los tribunales;tal vez así el SEÑOR, el Dios Todopoderoso,tenga compasión del remanente de José.

16 Por eso, así dice el SEÑOR omnipotente, el Dios Todopoderoso:«En todas las plazas se escucharán lamentos,y gritos de angustia en todas las calles.Llamarán a duelo a los campesinos,y a los llorones profesionales, a hacer lamentación.

17 Se escucharán lamentos en todos los viñedoscuando yo pase en medio de ti»,dice el SEÑOR.

18 ¡Ay de los que suspiranpor el día del SEÑOR!¿De qué les servirá ese díasi va a ser de oscuridad y no de luz?

19 Será como cuando alguien huye de un leóny se le viene encima un oso,o como cuando al llegar a su casa,apoya la mano en la paredy lo muerde una serpiente.

20 ¿No será el día del SEÑOR de oscuridad y no de luz?¡Será por cierto sombrío y sin resplandor!

21 «Detesto y aborrezco sus fiestas religiosas;no me agradan sus cultos solemnes.

22 Aunque me traigan holocaustos y ofrendas de cereal,no los aceptaré,ni prestaré atencióna los sacrificios de comunión de novillos cebados.

23 Aleja de mí el bullicio de tus canciones;no quiero oír la música de tus cítaras.

24 ¡Pero que fluya el derecho como las aguas,y la justicia como arroyo inagotable!

25 »Pueblo de Israel, ¿acaso me ofrecieron sacrificios y ofrendasdurante los cuarenta años en el desierto?

26 Ustedes tendrán que cargar con la imagen de Sicut, su rey,y también con la de Quiyún,imágenes de esos dioses astralesque ustedes mismos se han fabricado.

27 Entonces los mandaré al exilio más allá de Damasco»,dice el SEÑOR, cuyo nombre es Dios Todopoderoso.

Amós 5 Commentary

Chapter 5

Israel is called to seek the Lord. (1-6) Earnest exhortations to repentance. (7-17) Threatenings respecting idolatries. (18-27)

Verses 1-6 The convincing, awakening word must be heard and heeded, as well as words of comfort and peace; for whether we hear or forbear, the word of God shall take effect. The Lord still proclaims mercy to men, but they often expect deliverance from such self-invented forms as make their condemnation sure. While they refuse to come to Christ and to seek mercy in and by him, that they may live, the fire of Divine wrath breaks forth upon them. Men may make an idol of the world, but will find it cannot protect.

Verses 7-17 The same almighty power can, for repenting sinners, easily turn affliction and sorrow into prosperity and joy, and as easily turn the prosperity of daring sinners into utter darkness. Evil times will not bear plain dealing; that is, evil men will not. And these men were evil men indeed, when wise and good men thought it in vain even to speak to them. Those who will seek and love that which is good, may help to save the land from ruin. It behoves us to plead God's spiritual promises, to beseech him to create in us a clean heart, and to renew a right spirit within us. The Lord is ever ready to be gracious to the souls that seek him; and then piety and every duty will be attended to. But as for sinful Israel, God's judgments had often passed by them, now they shall pass through them.

Verses 18-27 Woe unto those that desire the day of the Lord's judgments, that wish for times of war and confusion; as some who long for changes, hoping to rise upon the ruins of their country! but this should be so great a desolation, that nobody could gain by it. The day of the Lord will be a dark, dismal, gloomy day to all impenitent sinners. When God makes a day dark, all the world cannot make it light. Those who are not reformed by the judgments of God, will be pursued by them; if they escape one, another stands ready to seize them. A pretence of piety is double iniquity, and so it will be found. The people of Israel copied the crimes of their forefathers. The law of worshipping the Lord our God, is, Him only we must serve. Professors thrive so little, because they have little or no communion with God in their duties. They were led captive by Satan into idolatry, therefore God caused them to go into captivity among idolaters.

INTRODUCTION TO AMOS 5

In this chapter the prophet exhorts Israel to hear his lamentation over them for their impending ruin, Am 5:1-3; nevertheless to seek the Lord, and all that is good; to forsake their idols, and repent of their sins, in hopes of finding mercy, and living comfortably; or otherwise they must expect the wrath of God for their iniquities, especially their oppression of the poor, Am 5:4-15; otherwise it would be a time of weeping and wailing, of darkness and distress, however they might harden or flatter themselves, or make a jest of it, Am 5:16-20; for all their sacrifices and ceremonial worship would signify nothing, so long as they continued their idolatry with them Am 5:21-26; and therefore should surely go into captivity, Am 5:27.
